Hi, Dome, Flat Top or Dish Piston's for 347 build with tfs twisted wedge heads.. anyone??

I'm going domed for my BOSS302 buildup, but they are expensive for the TW heads. The only places I've found that have them are DSS and Coast High so I'm prolby going to order from them.

He obviously received very good answers and recommendations since he is asking what type of pistons he should get.

All depends what compression ratio you want to achieve, and that should based on your camshaft and fuel choice.

Personally, I would shoot for a dish or flat-top, even if going N/A. You can get it in the 10.5:1 range.

Brian at Adperformance would be a very solid person to talk to. He is been doing it longer than any other mass producer I am aware of. Even Rick, on this site, could help you out greatly.

if your going to rely on forced induction to make your power, i would strive for a lower compression ratio.

if you arent going a power adder and running N/A run flat top or a dome to get the highest CR possible without detonation with the gas your going to run.

dont go so high that you will be forced to run race gas or octane booster all the time. i would leave room for the ability to retard the timing and be able to run on cheaper gas if need be.

not being mean, but this has ALL been covered. i tried explaining why people would choose one piston style vs another. i also told him to talk to brian and i figured he did because i didnt hear from him for a few weeks. i dunno, good luck with whatever you go with

Hi guys thanks for the replies, I emailed that adperformance weeks ago, I plan on running regular gas maybe higher octane.. but just pump gas. Anyways I cancelled an order for a kit because I wasn't sure about the piston choice.. I am not planning on going with forced induction for a good while but down the road maybe.. I am going with twisted wedge heads a r intake.. and a camshaft custom made, but with emission considerations. I have emailed a few companies about piston choice.. but haven't got any response.. looks like I will be going with flat top, but will these need to be notched with twisted wedge heads, or not? Any response is great, I appreciate it.. other posts have I just received "go ask..." responses.. I just assumed you guys would be able to help me out!!! And many have even 1991Gt.. Thanks Big thing for me is power, but emissions legal.. and thats pretty much it.. I know the heads and intake I want.. cam will be custom, 347 with 5.315 rod length.. and pistons flat top?? if that is recommended????? thats the only question I have... piston choice...

Your piston choice is basically your comp. ratio choice. If you want to run pump gas with the option of power adder later I wouldn't run much greater than 9:1 or 9.5:1. If you think you'll run N/A for quite some time, 10:1 or 10.5:1 makes nice power on pump gas.

The kit that I was looking at with flat top pistons gives me 10:1 with a 61cc combustion chamber, which matches the heads I am looking at.. Is that ok then..

Since you haven't bought heads yet, you should consider buying some with OEM valve spacing/angle as there are 100x more pistons made for them than TW heads.
Of course, I'm not saying I regret having TW heads myself, but it would be nice to have more options when shopping for a forged assembly to fit in my boss302 block.

Yes, they will work.

Since you are buying them anyways, just call Brian and tell them what you are wanting (pump gas), and the rest of your build, and you want a budget kit.

He will hook you up. You just need to give him a call.

Just got a reply from ad performance and they said the flat top would work well with those tfs heads, that's great.. .just what I was looking for.. I really just wanted to know what kit to order, so I can get it off to the machine shop.. I would like to build the top end myself.. is that all I should drop off, the bare block and the kit.. or do I need a new flywheel, balancer, I guess my machine shop would know what they need, assuming oil pan would be smart to keep it clean in there once their finished.. oil pump etc.

When in doubt, ask the machine shop what they need. Don't worry about the oil pan and such, the shop should wrap the shortblock in plastic or something to keep it clean.

Did you purchase a balanced kit or is that being done by the shop?

They can send you a balance kit for an additional fee. This will typically require you to get a new balancer and flywheel. More than likely, the 28 oz balancer/flywheel combination.
