door glass questions?

ok so ive heard that transplanting door glass, both main and quarter, tracks, and EVERYTHING is close to the biggest bitch in the world to try and do. im low on time and due to work and location restrictions i only have 2-3 hours in a day to to work. ive never actually attempted it before, and i would really like to know just what im getting myself into. if its something i really shouldnt undertake as a novice in that department, could you point me in the direction of someone who could? thanks for any help.

I've never trnasplanted the glass itself but I have installed felts, regulatos, and weatherstripping and it wasn't THAT bad. The worst part is getting your hands in there at odd angles through the relatively small openings in the sheetmetal, the larger you are the worse it is. If you have a helper use them, I've been pinched/cut before by the glass sliding down on me. Other than space and visibility it really is not hard, adjusting it all just takes some patience when you are done hooking it all up.

I would not put it on my top ten "worst jobs".

i tried to remove my side glass......

the rears were easy..........but i COULD NOT figger out how to get the fronts out thru the top of the door, i was alone and afraid i'd break it, it is heavy and awkward

if i could have removed the mounting bracket, i think it would have been easy, but that looked like it was riveted on............

maybe another set of hands/eyes/brains would have helped

i finally gave up, cause i wasn't ready to replace it yet, just practicing since i had to replace a regulator

As far as I know the glass is permanently attached to the lower bracket, but that braket comes off the regulator via three easy screws (on my 67s). I've never taken one all the way out but is the weatherstripping is removed I'm pretty sure they can be simply lifted out. I've seen glass loose and doors without glass MANY times so I know it comes out somehow. Sorry I'm not more help.

Easiest way is to remove the vent window assembly first. It gives you more room to manuever the door window out the top. Removing the felts gives even better access.

The fun is in remembering how to put every thing back and then getting it all aligned. . . .

I've completely disassembled my doors and rear quarter windows and it's really not that big of a deal. The most frustrating part of the process is removing the front vent glass and assembly.

I would highly recommend buying a Ford manual for your year Mustang before you begin. There is a sequence to the disassembly and trying to go it blind or with a Haynes (even worse) is a receipe for trouble. But here's basically what you'll need to do:

Remove the handles, cranks, armrest, etc..
Remove the door inserts and watersheild and window felt
Remove the upper stops
Remove the clips from the rollers holding the window track to the regulator (cranking mechanism)
Then you slide the window sorta up and back and tip it forward all at the same time...and it'll come right out.

The vent window assembly is really difficult to explain as is the rear quarter window, so I won't even try.

Buy the manual, dig in and once you get one side out, the other is a breeze.
