Interior and Upholstery Door Speakers- found suggestion to go component, not coaxial

My car currently has some 6.5" door speakers that don't fit properly. I started doing some research on door speakers, to find the size needed, and found the post below.

Dash - 3.5" , Door - 6" , Rear Seat - 6" x 8" Use component speakers and put the dome tweeters and crossovers in the dash. Don't use coaxials, especially in the doors - use 6.5" woofers and trim some metal. You don't need tweeters in the back seat - use a 5.25" mid mounted on a plate. Good stereo separation happens at ear level, not at leg level. Lot's of people don't agree with this and we may hear from them.

I understand what he is saying and like the idea of the component speakers but I don't like the idea of trimming the door metal; I will have to look to see if there are 6" woofers available for the door. I'm not sure what plate he is referring to for the 5.25" mid but I can dig around; maybe a custom made plate??

I don't plan on this being a high end stereo build by any means but I kind of thought since I'm going to need door speakers I should buy decent stuff and do it right.

What are your guys opnions on what the post I found says and / or what have your speaker experiences been and / or what would be your suggestion to get something that sounds decent but not spend a lot of money.

I used component Rockord 6 inch in the doors with the tweeters in the dash. No trimming and i used this backstrap stuff to mount the tweeters in the dash.

If the car has an exhaust system on it, i'm not sure it really matters what you do if you don't either have a really powerful head unit or an amplifier.
Most head units don't put out more than 25w RMS and while i'm no expert, i just don't think it's enough, it will distort before you get to a suitable driving volume.

Do you know if the Rockford 6 inch componets were a "low-profile" design or anything special to where they cleared everyhing without having to do any trimming?

My car is pretty loud; it has longtubes with dumped flowmasters. I don't plan on buying a powerful head unit so what you mention about a regular headunit and distortion is a valid point.

What kind of headunit do you have? How does your sound?

BTW... Take a look at the Crutchfield website. Put in your make, model, year, etc... and it will tell you what fits. From there, you have model numbers at the very least.

The reproduction console with cupholders is already on my Wishlist at LMR

Many (probably) of us have that cupholder console. Its great, just be aware its supposed to be painted to match. Just getting it and installing it, it won't match your interior coloring exactly. Maybe black would, but the titanium gray or whatever, doesn't.

I mean mine (titanium gray interior) doesn't match, but i'm just rolling with it for now. I assume even if you painted the console it still wouldn't match exactly as existing interior pieces have faded or whatever. I'll prep and paint everything at once when the time comes.

I have 6.5" Diamond Audio front components in my Coupe. I used a piece of high density particle board (want to say 1/2" or 3/4" thick) as an adapter and if fits behind the stock door panel and the woofer does not touch the grill. Can be done you just have to find ways to make it work.

These are the ones i have.
Honestly, I'm not sure they sound any better than the stock speakers i had in the dash with sonys in the doors.
We will soon see how they work with an amp, i have the car wired up now for a 5 channel 50x4 RMS and 500x1 for the sub. Just have to swap over to the RCA cables and mount the amp.
I had taken most of the interior out to have the seatbelts rebuilt and rewebbed, while i was in there i added all the amp wiring, kilmat and new quarter windows. Kinda snowballed. My backs were already rockford 2 way 5x7.
Essentially i will be doubling the power going to the 4 speakers in the car.

Thanks for the post, brand name, model of speakers, and letting me know how they sound. I will look at the speakers you posted. I imagine my rear speakers might be different since my car is a hatch.

Did the door speakers mount easily or did you have to use any adapters or cut the doors to accept them?

I don't think a hatch to a notch is apples to apples comparison.
Not sure if your car is a hatch or a notch, but if it's a hatch, i still don't believe anything less than 50w rms is enough for the stock location speakers.
There are head units (i think) that go that high, but i didn't see many.

I added a kenwood x802 5 channel i got on ebay manufacturer refurbished for just over $200 (they also have them on amazon, but you can't make an offer). It's a couple models years old, but i don't think it matters.
Made my stereo sound 250% better.

Before if i ran it in the garage, car off, it sounded tolerable.
Car running, it was distorted before it hit a suitable volume.
While driving, the stereo was pointless to use.
Now i can run it at a volume higher than i actually want to subject my kids to and the subwoofer adds bass, which is almost impossible to get out of hatch with stock location speakers.

I don't think 1/2 in difference in speakers in the door really matter and I personally don't think people need speakers in the doors or back seat need to handle 250w. If you want to use the front speakers you have, do like aero did and make a plate that just brings them out a little bit, if you don't feel like it, just buy speakers .5 inch smaller.

No they all fit like a glove and mounted perfect in the stock locations. I was so happy they fit the doors no drilling or any thing they just fit perfectly.
