Drag car idea

check this out, a buddy of mine is offering to sell me an unmolested 91 5.0L for $200. what would I do with this engine? It came to me in a daydream. junkyard turbos and a little nitrous for kicks. I would port the stock heads, put in the valley pan guard, install head studs, an E303 cam, keep the factory forged pistons and stock bottom end, then to top it off with a megasquirt EFI - all DIY. I was playing with the simulation on dyno2000 and depending on turbocharger choice, 500 hp without an intercooler is feasible - theoretically. back it up by a C4, and put it in a gutted 65-66 coupe and go play :). If I swipe the 8.8 along with the 5.0L, it sounds like a pretty nice little race car for less than $1000 invested in drivetrain that can handle alot of heavier race cars. I surmise the factory shortblock lifespan would be considerably worsened, but bang for the buck, this combo should run with the best. As long as the rpm don't get crazy (over 5,000), and the mixture stays rich, I don't forsee any tragic failures occuring (theoretically), exept for maybe blown head gaskets and a split down the block. is there a DIY O-ring tool for the block :)

In reality, this will likely never happen, but after all, if the engine blows, its only out $200 + whatever breaks. Maybe its the hillbilly in me talking, or maybe its a loophole to the "Speed Costs Money. . ." mantra. You decide

It's all possible. Biggest problem will getting the heads not to lift. ARP studs work for some people with those heads, other go to aftermarket because they just can't keep them sealed. If it was me, I'd stay with a carb to continue the whole junk yard idea. And it will help you since you don't want an intercooler. People do it alot. It fun to watch guys running stupid fast with little money, and stock blocks.

10sec, i know specifically about the turbo headers you are doing, but if I had a roller car looking for an engine I wouls be all over it.

legend has it the fastest street car in rockford, IL has a fox mustang with (of all things) a 500 ci cadillac motor on 250 shot of nitrous with an untouched bottom end. Maybe a twin turno 460 might work :)

Seriously, if I had a junk car to race, I would be all over it, but time, money, and other commitments keep it a dream.

If you wanted to go fast, leave it in the fox chassis :D

We are doing a "stock shortblock" class of sorts in my area (metro atlanta) and there have been a few turbo/AOD combos in the 6.60-6.70 range with stock motor and cam, ported e7s or GT40s and cobra/explorer intake.
