Driver side rear wheel whobble

Hello Gents,

I've got this problem with my car and I was wondering if anyone can give me some ideas as to whats causing this, cuz i've no real clue.

Here we go, Bout half a year ago, i was told my driver side rear wheel whobbled. Then a day later, one of my friends that was driving behind me said it was whobbling aswell. I checked the studs, lugnuts and the wheel to see if everthing was set properly, and i couldn't see anything wrong there.

Then I didn't really drive it very much for awhile cuz I was all paranoid and no money to really put into it to fix whatever it was.

Anyway, tonight I had my friend stand outside the car as i coasted, and he said it had a slight whobble but you could really notice it.

The only thing I can come up with is either the hub in the drum is loose, or maybe something in the axel itself. It's interesting that people started noticing this when i redid all the rear leafs and shocks around the same time, but i dunno how that would cause the wheel to whobble?

Any other ideas? I dunno how to fix this. :( :shrug: I appreciate any help you can give

Hi Ryan, well if the other wheel (left rear) is ok try to mount it on the right side then check again, you can safely jack up the rear of the car and support it with jack stands to check.
If the wobble moves to the other side then its your rim/tire. If the wobble stays on the same side then its most likely your axle hub...its bent. Vin

I figured it might have something to do with the hub assembly in there. I'll check it out.

I'm pretty sure the wheel isn't bent, they are brand new V-40s from vintage wheel works. but if i check out the hub assembly and it's not bent or something i'll try switching the wheels and see if the wheel is truly just bent.

Just cause the rims are new doesn't mean you didn't get a reject.

Another possibility: Improperly seated tire or defective tire.

If it's the axle hub, it's no big deal to replace the axle. You should be able to get your local parts store to press a bearing for you. Other than that the only special equipment you need is an axle puller (slide hammer) which you can rent just about anywhere.

You may or may not need the puller, sometimes the axle will comeout just by pulling on it after you unbolt the bearing/brake backing plate retainer. Check the tires and rims before going to the axle ( there's no hub on the rears)
 
Correct, there really isn't a hub in the rear, the rim bolts directly to the axle with the drum face sandwiched in between.

Sometimes you can get by without a puller by pulling the drum off, flipping it backwards and reinstalling it with the lugnuts just started. Yank back on the drum a few times and it should pop free.

Axles aren't very easy to bend, so I am betting wheel/tire.

I guess i forgot to mention that about a year ago or so, i lost control of the car and hit a kerb, but i skipped over the kerb completely with the right side wheels. This was with my old wheels and tires, and I remember looking at the OLD wheels/tires...that the inside of the driver side rear wheel was scuffed alittle bit. not sure if i hit it hard enough to bend the hub on the axle or what.

I'll go check out the axle and then switch the tires and see...

LOL, well, i dunno if i hit that side at all. just scuffed it. that wheel wasn't bent at all. but that may be it. I'm gonna go to my friends house and we'll check all the things out.

EDIT: I said, right side wheels...i guess that mighta sounded confusing as to which said, but i meant the passenger side wheels hit the kerb.... and that side skipped over completely. kinda hard to explain i guess.

well, i took the drum off, the axle looks fine to me, it's not bent or whobbley or anything. i'm starting to think it's the wheel..

i'm gonna put the wheel to the other side and check it out.

does anyone know Vintage wheel works return policy? lol
 
If you've switched them and the wobble is still there, its the axle.

This is a 8.8 that hit the curb and is very noticable.

What rear do you have, if it's an 8", probably someone here can hook you up. I have a pair of axles from an 8" in my shed, but I'm in central Oklahoma.

well, easy way to tell is if the top and bottom of the housing looks flattened, you have an 8". If you crawl under the car and were making like you were going to pull the 3rd member out of the housing with a ratchet and socket and found that you couldn't get a socket on the bottom two bolts, you have a 9", if you can get on them with a regular socket and a ratchet, you have an 8". Only the K code mustangs and shelbys came with 9" rears in '65-'66 from the factory.

Used axle price..... well, if your 9" rear is the same width as a factory 8" rear, and a PO didn't put bigger spline axles in there and it's a small bearing 9", a 28 spline 8" axle will fit right in it's place. I'd say you could pick one up for say, $20 as they're a dime a dozen. If you have a 31 spline that is the same lenght, the price will probably triple, as a pair of used ones goes for about $100+ and if you have a pair, why would you want to split them up? If the rear end isn't a factory width, well, chances are you're SOL. Now if it's just a tad bit narrower, say 1/2"-3/4", you can take the longer axle and cut the splined end off in a chop saw, bevel the end with a grinder, and use a triangle file to clean up the splines, and use that.
