I've seen people do this. My suggestion is to get the right driveshaft to begin with. Assuming that your cut is true, and you have the right jigs, you probably won't have a balanced shaft, and you risk warping the DS. Just like it's an art to weld axle housings...
If you're going to spend the coin to get a t56, get the right shaft.
I had a Crown Vic cop car aluminum drive shaft shortened and balanced for my Thunderbird. It was $123.00 to shorten it, balance it, and install adapter u-joints to use my yoke and flange with the larger driveshaft. A LOT cheaper than ordering a custom drive shaft.
