Driveshaft .....

I have searched and read through tons of threads but still can't find what I need .. My driveshaft on my 98 gt is rubbing on the e-brake bracket/cable. I was thinking of getting an aluminum one. Is there any size difference between my rust bucket and the aluminum driveshaft?

Also, what can I do to get to stop rubbing? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Aluminum driveshaft is actually thicker - so that wouldn't help. Either the bracket for your e-brake cables is bent out of shape, or your pinion angle is off due to too low a drop.

you can try to tie the line up out of the way with zip ties or something similar

steel driveshaft measures @3" and the aluminum measure @3.5" so it larger diameter WILL cause it to hit more, my AL/d-shaft rubbed and all I had to-do was grind down the head of the rivets some

what mods have you done to the suspension?

It's got Tokico 5 way adjustables and Eibach springs (1.5 in drop) ... I put the springs on like 5 years ago so I don't remember exactly what type they are (maybe Pro-Kit)?

Here's the story: I haven't really driven it much in the past couple years because I got a truck and have been studying my brains out to get out of college. Now that I've graduated, I've got some time and am trying to fix misc. things that are crappy due to old age, rotten, and what not.

So, I've been driving it for like a week or so now and noticed that my shifter is bouncing more than it ever has while I'm driving down the road but stops at 75mph +. It also shakes a little when starting off in first ... So I start checking things out visually first of course. I notice that the DS has two lines on it (so to speak) and I figured it must be rubbing. I look above the DS and see that the little bracket where the e-brake lines connect is where it's rubbing. The issue is, the driveshaft has almost eaten away one side of the bracket (meaning the hose is next, will fall out, etc.). I can take a picture if that will help.

I don't know how to go about this one. It almost seems like the rear needs to be raised or something to lower the driveshaft?????

FWIW, all my fluids are new ... my u-joints have never been replaced ...

If you read all that, thanks for taking the time ... I appreciate any advise.

get a pic of it. that way we can see the problem and tell you what needs to be done

Rubber trans mount might have eaten away, or engine mounts.

OK, I took some pics ... I had to work for em' ... some tight space up in there.




This is a pic of just the driveshaft as I first noticed the marks on it:



Here's a closer-up pic of where it's grinding away the bracket:



It's almost through on the right side. So how can I get the DS lower somehow?

Any suggestions???

I have the same problem, thought about getting an aluminum one but found out it was actually bigger so that crossed out that idea.

i wonder why is that. My car is dropped alot more then 1.5, and i have aluminum DS, and i have no issue whats so ever....

But the good news is that since its rubbing on the none essential area of non essential parts(as far as strength related), i say your solution is quick use of dremol away...
But before you bust out dremol, i would check and make sure your transmount, and engine mounts are still in good shape as if those are worn it'll allow engine/trans to move around ( there for ur driveshaft would move as well)

^ I've been thinking about the trans mount but don't exactly know how to check it. I don't know how much movement is acceptable when using a prybar ... Is the trans supposed to be crooked a little, like one side tilted up some? Because that's how mine is. I took the DS off earlier just to have more room to look around and noticed the trans is slightly tilted. Is that normal?

no, everything should sit level. also check your engine mounts, I'll bet thats where your problem is. also I see you lowered your car, did you remove the OEM rear pinion snubber or the brkt wth the damper that goes around the rear diff?

I don't know what the "rear pinion snubber" is but I didn't remove it. Nor did I remove the damper. If I take a picture of my transmission the way it's sitting, can you tell me if it's sitting wrong? Driveline stuff is fairly new to me and I'm trying to learn on my own so I appreciate the help.

Also, how exactly do I check my engine mounts? I can't really see them good or maybe I just don't know what to look for.

Can anybody tell me if the way my transmission looks like it's sitting normal? In terms of the slight tilt, where the right side is higher than the left. The DS is only rubbing on the right side of the e-brake bracket so I was wondering if the trans is supposed to look like this? I had to stick my camera up through the h-pipe (so that you know the viewpoint) ... If anyone knows if it looks wacky let me know please. Thx.

from the sound of it i call engine mounts too... it would be like a teeter totter and push the tailshaft of the transmission up in the air... because it would pivot on the trans mount...

you can check em by jacking up the motor and see how much movement is in em, you would know right away if the mounts are shot.. might even be able to look at em and know..
