Driving a manual

I am getting my first stang on friday and my parents havent had a manual car for like 10 years. Just wanted to know how long it took to learn to drive one. I already know how to drive but just not shift gears and drive.

some people are faster than others so it all depends on the driver themselves. it should take a few hours to really get the hang of it. especially stopping on hills and then going without stalling, burning up the tires or clutch. find a hill or driveway and practice stopping on the hill and trying to get the car going up the hill. good luck

Its easy just don't ride the clutch and have patience. Practice makes perfect.

Just don't let go of the clutch really fast. Smoothly move the clutch and then you will see when it will start to move the car. Then learn from there.

about 10 minutes for me to get it right on a 95 dodge dually diesel. those are easy to drive.

With you having 3.55s it should be a lot easier for you to learn. I leared on 2.73s and it took some time. I can't go up a hill unless I use the clutch to hold the car for a sec. My feet are too big to use the brake and press the gas. I just hope it won't tear up my clutch since I only have to do it every once in a while.

It probably won't take you long, you said you haven't driven one in 10 years. It's kinda like riding a bike. You may have to remaster it, but you just don't forget it. Just listen to them, clutch out smooth, give her some throttle, (have to experiment for different situations) and for hills, you have an e-brake if necessary. Good luck.

No my parents havent had one in like 10 years so i dont have anything to practice on. I debated wehter my friend would let me drive his trans am but i decided i didnt want to emberace myself to much.

My 50 year old mother can drive a manual, and she don't even know what a transmission is. Don't worry, it's very easy to learn.

If you can get the car to move from a stop without jerking and killing it...you already know how to drive stick...don't be afraid to ride the clutch sometimes it's the only way...I leard with in 3 hours on a 300RWHP mustang...yeah it sucked but it's a piece of cake now...

lol i learned from drivin a 89 toyota in the feilds started out jsuyt dumpin the clutch and spinnin in first lol that was the good ol days when i was like 10 lol but it is easy im tryign to teach my girl to drive one she does alright

When you can forget about shifting and do it automatically, then you have mastered it. I dont drive stick enough. I have to keep the radio low so that I can hear what the engine is doing! My friend makes fun of me.

It's easier to learn how to drive with a more powerfull vehicle so stalling isn't such an issue. I've taught a few people how to drive a stick with my foxbody, and taught them how to do a burnout at the same time. Teaching someone with a 4 banger your either dealing with stalling or burning the clutch. I stall out sometimes when I have to drive cars at work becaue I am not used to such low tq.

I don't know about the 5minutes/5years idea. However it does take a while to get it perfect. When you can shift a manual like a auto caddy, (no jerking) that's when you know your are getting good. On the oppisite, you know your good when you can shift your 5speed so it sounds like it's got a built C4 with a manual valve body. (powershifting baby!!!)

Easy solution, burn the hell out of the clutch, then replace it and you'll be fine!

lol driving barefooted is still kinda hard for me... i need my normal shoes. If I try and wear new shoes where I dont have as much feeling, I suck, and barefooted i suck.. lol picky feet i guess.. But ya man, it's simple. And dont say "of course it's easy for you, you know how to drive a stick" We all learned sometime or another. My way of learning, was buying a 93 4cyl LX and having to drive it home with no experience lol... By the 2nd light I was fine lol. G'luck

look up info on manual trans i.e. whats goin on when u press and release the clutch. I used to half a$$ knew how to drive a stick, then i learned what's happening when i was letting out the clutch and it became tons easier.
