I am yet to become a mustang owner, but am looking forward to owning one (probably used) in the future. I was just wondering what exactly this "drone" everyone always complains about actually sounds like. Does anyone have an audio clip or a video link where there is a clear example of the typical "highway drone" on a mustang?

Drone is when you put an aftermarket catback exhaust on your car, and at highway speeds when you're around 2k RPM's, the exhaust noise is constant and "droning" in your ears. I don't mind it. It gets on some people nerves, but the best thing to do is swap your rear end gear for some 3.73's or 4.10's, which will keep you from being in that 2k zone on the highway :D

LOVE DRONE IN A STANG!! :nice: :nice: :nice:   :spot: :spot: :spot: :flag:

Don't listen to people complaining about the drone, I did for a long time and they got me all worried. I just got some Flowmaster Super 40's and Ive been in one with the regular deltas.... I can barely hear the Super 40's, and the deltas were noticeable but barely... Im constantly reving it pretty high just so I can hear them. I really have no clue what this drone is that everyone complains about????

Make the best exhaust sound you can with your voice and your mouth closed. Do this for one hour....that's drone.
 :rlaugh:

I tried that just for a split second and started busting up right now.

Dude, don't let the "drone" factor scare ya. You'll find most people like it. I myself try to keep it around 2100 rpms around town cuz it's a MAJOR head turner. As for the gear change, you'll be well outa the drone zone on the freeway if you change them.

My x pipe and packs drone like a mother at 2100rpms. Doesn't bother me but when I have passengers, they are like "wtf ur car is sooo loud". The car vibrates like crazy from the drone above 2k in 5th.

I don't mind. I love the mean sound. I play music louder when I take long highway trips and it mostly drowns it out.

put the windows down, drone is gone.

You must not have a drony exhaust then.
My drone shakes the whole car buddy, it's so loud and noticable. I want to try to dynamatt the bottom of my trunk like someone tried before. I need to dynamatt the top anyways, sub rattles the trunk.

well it works for me... but i try to stay away from 2k anyway. and yes it is drony, bassani catted x and bassani catback.

if you have a loud exhaust then yes you will still hear it, but you will hear the real sound of it and not the drone on the inside. imo, it sounds much better on the outside than inside.

The outside definately sounds better. The inside has a few parts rattling in my C pillar/rear seats and a few places in my center control/dash when I'm in the 1900-2100 area (DZ, drone zone). I'm not exactly sure where the rattling is coming from but it only started after my x pipe and cat back. Shook some stuff loose I guess.

I love my drone.. speaking of which. I'm sure that this has came up before, but does anyone ever experience a cricket sound coming from driver side dash? I think it's coming from the cluster area.. but it does it sometimes whenever I drive the stang. After a while it's gone... Sometimes it only does it around 2000 rpm only
