Dryer Danger?

Is it dangerous to put a dryer in your garage? We just got a new house and my girlfriend wants to put the dryer in the garage since there are already hookups in there. Is there any chance it could set off fumes in there from the cars, carb cleaner or whatever?

Gas dryer? Do you have a gas water heater in the garage? If you do, I doubt it'll be any more dangerous. One problem with a dryer in the garage, it'll warm up the garage and help to humidify the air, then as it cools off, the humidity will condense and not just on the top of stuff, it'll get up and under and things that are bare steel will begin to rust. (Plus this gives you a reason to say no )

Is your water heater sitting on a stand that holds it, say, 16 inches off the floor? Most areas have a fire safety code that requires this if a water heater is located in a garage - it's supposed to keep the standing pilot flame up away from combustible fumes that are heavier than air.

The dryer might not be as safe as the water heater, especially if it sits lower. On the other hand, most new gas dryers have an electronic ignition system, which makes tham safer than the older models with the pilot flame (no combustion source present when not in use).

A neighbor of mine had fire damage (luckily confined to the garage) because one of his young children turned on the burner valve of a propane BBQ grill that was stored in the garage - near the water heater. If it's just a garage with a car stored in it, you're probably okay. If you do any amount of restoration work in that space, particularly involving parts cleaner or solvents, think about an electric dryer. You wanted another 220v outlet in there anyway, didn't you?

I don't know if I'd call what I've done to my stang restoration work, but yeah I some times use solvent and stuff like that. I'll try and be careful I figure I'll just leave the garage door open when I'm doing fume stuff. By the way it's an electric dryer.

If it's vented outdoors I don't think the humidity will be a problem, and if it's an electric dryer you don't have to worry about fumes.

You do have a potential problem. The coil elements in an electric dryer could set off some accumulated fumes. If the stang is in there, fumes coming off the carb vent sink to the lowest point. Most codes require a 6 inch curb between the garage and an adjacent room if a door is present. I would raise it up on a stand. The element in the dry may be aleady higher than that. If it is, you are ok. The H2O heater if electric has a submurged element so it is safe. If things are gas powered, it isn't a safe situation. The ignitor could set off fumes if in an abundent quantity. Cross ventilation will help matters.

Heck Yeah. That is a MAJOR problem. Your "girlfriend" (also known as, soon to be WIFE) wants to put something besides a car in the garage. You best put a stop to that activity now, or soon your "crappy" cars ("why don't you sell that old piece of crap and get me a minivan") will be in the driveway

Tools, cars, beer, chairs and TV are all that belong in a garage (also known as MANTOWN)...we don't need no steenkin dryers.

Also, if the dryer is out there...soon it will be the washer....
