mine does it too. Your clutch may need to be adjusted, I know mine does. My clutch doesn't engage til its right at the floor. When going into reverse, I often put it in before I turn the car on. its easier that way.

might be time to do a tranny rebuild. Sounds like the synchros might be going.

I could be wrong but I was told the reverse has no synchros. To remedy your problem just shift into 1st gear before you go into reverse. It won't grind at all.

this is 100% correct... I had the same problem when I first bought my mustang. I actually cracked out the owners manual and it pretty much states word for word what Aaron just said. You must throw it into a gear BEFORE going into reverse or it stands the chance of not engaging correctly (ie grinding)

Just put it into a forward gear (I usually put it in 4 or 5th) then put it in reverse... No syncros in reverse. Now arent you happy you dont have a messed up tranny?

Man... your tranny doesn't need to be rebuilt at all. Put the car in reverse before starting it up. Or put it in first and move forward a bit and then go into reverse to get the shifter into "R" without any fuss.

Only the forward gears are syncronized. When you start the car, put it in nutural and take your foot off the clutch before hitting reverse, the imput shaft starts spinning...... This the grinding. Keep the shaft from spinning and you will be fine.

Edit: I type too slow

Maybe, but you bring up a good point. Remember kids when you turn the car on, the flywheel is spinning at xxxRPM. Try to put the car in reverse starts the imput shaft from a standstill, as srothfuss stated, causing it to "grind" into gear.
