Dust Sheilds How do you get them off?

How in the hell do you get these off? I ripped one side to shreds because it was cracked but would prefer to remove the other cleanly. I air hammered out these things but it still wont budge. I guess I am going to have to drill out the whole center section? Any advice? Thanks

Are we talkin about the brake's dust shields?

I thought I recalled them unbolting from the inside (engine side) of the shield.

Yes the brake shields, they do not bolt on. This is on a Cobra if it could possibly matter.

Here is what side came off like. It already had a huge crack in it anyhow (which caused these to rattle loudly every time the doors shut) but I helped it off just want to get these odd fasteners off now....

Those things are pop rivets. Your supposed to get the right size drillbit and drill them out. Once there out the dust shields should pop right out. If not then the dust shield is siezed to the hub, a hammer should do the trick. Rip it off if you have too, dust shields are really just heat trappers for your brake rotors.

I drilled mine out when I installed my brake cooling ducts...I believe you need a 9/32" bit. Dont quote me on that tho...I could be way off. O and have a punch handy to pop out any excess from the holes.

BFH and a chisel. Took the heads right off of the rivets. Might have taken 5-6 good swings of the hammer on each rivet.

The proper way to remove them is a little punch to pop out the middle portion and then a 1/4 inch drill bit through the middle.

Now that you've knocked the centers out, drill them one more size bigger. They should fall off then.

Huh? Shouldn't even hurt one. Just run it through the hole those pins your are holding came out of. There's just a tiny bit of the rivet left holding the things on there.

Yea what gcomfx said. But with the centers out you may just be able to pry the shield off with a bit of force...if you want to try that. The idea with the drill bit is you want to use a bit that thas the same diameter as the hole in the hub, so your not enlarging that hole just drilling out all the rivet material from inside the hole.

There you go... maybe that'll clear it up.

Those are the centers to the rivets....you knocked them out...good....now just dril out those rivits...(the rivets surround the centers you got in your hand) You can rivit them back in when you put on new ones.

I painted mine then bolted them back on. It was a bitch to get them off but do what everybody else said

Just leave them off. There useless. Who really cares about getting dust on the steering/suspension components, as long as the dust is non corrosive of course. That dust shield prevents proper cooling to practically the entire inner face of that rotor .
