Well I have this 86 all stripped down as far as the interior goes. I was contemplating dyno-matting the interior floor/hatch area then then putting in new carpet and my new seats. But after searching it doesnt seem many people do this. is it not a good idea to dynomat the inside? I know not to dynomat over screw holes and such. My objective is to deaden outside sound and keep my beat inside as much as possible. My wife always complains about the exhaust sound (drone) being too loud in my stangs. But this time I am going to replace the drone with deafening music...lol.

Advice/How to's appreciated

this time I searched for dynomat instead of dyno mat and got some good hits. But feel free to drop a opinion or advice on me anyway.

Im working on this now, i took up the carpet, rear seats, and hatch carpet. Im just about done getting all the old sound deadening off. I have some surface rust to sand down and paint then im going to deaden the whole floor pan, including areas the old stuff didnt cover.

I bought 100 sq ft of Fatmat brand off ebay pretty cheap and thats what im going to be using. It seems that as long as you have a clean non-oily surface it should stick well and not give you any problems.

what are you using to clean the oily areas?? My rear hatch metail is pretty oily. What are you painting it with to fight the rust too?

I am thinking on doing my doors too, going to look up fatmat now.

i dyno'ed my whole car just make sure you haver an ice pick or something to open up all the holes you need for the seats and belts ..etc.

you will have no problem, it makes the car a bit less noisy on the inside

To clean the areas im using simple green, i may try some grafiti remover my dad gets from work to see if it works better.

Im planning on using rustolem grey primer to spray the spots i have to sand. I may use something else but i think it will work fine. Its been too cold out to paint so im at a bit of a standstill right now.

Most of the old sound deadening peeled up pretty easy. Some was stuck on there really good, like in front of the drivers side seat where it got alot of wear. I used some stuff call xylene(sp?) you can get it at home depot. Just pour it on and let it soak for a little while and it should scrape right off. It is a little messy so someone else might have a better way of doing in. A heat gun or hair dryer does help but it seemed to just heat the surface of the old stuff up and when you scrapped it you didnt go all the way down to bare metal.

Yea mine were in pretty good shape, only the spare tire well and the passenger side floor pan had surface rust where the windshield had been leaking

There are quite a few threads on the corral with guys doing this. Home Depot has a roofing material that is very similar to dynomat and the other materials. It comes in a roll....i forget the name but go search on the corral and u will come across it. Just another option for ya.....

With the guys that have done it, does it just reduce road noise or does it handle exhaust drone, etc too?

Keep in mind, asphalt based sound deadening won't provide keep out as much noise as butyl based sound deadening will. I originally used that peel and seal stuff from home depot and it helped a little. But I recently bought some stuff called RAAMmat BXT and its so much better quality than the home depot stuff. I bought a roll to use on my entire floor.

check out this site that compares different kinds of sound deadening:

Where did u get that stuff from? I just want the best bang for the buck. Sure im positive that other products can work better...but its just the cost that starts to outweigh the gain.

www.raamaudio.com

The stuff isn't cheap compared to the asphalt stuff, but it works just as well as dynamat at a cheaper price.

I used fatmat and massback carpet. Bought the fatmat off ebay and carpet from resto 5.0. Both seem to work well.

x2!

Im curious as to the weight of this stuff. Ive thought about yanking up all my old interior, putting some dynomat down, and recarpeting the ole gal. I would really like to know the weight difference though. I definately do not want to add weight to the car.
