Anybody seen the auction on E-Bay for a 2001 Silver Saleen S281 SC #01-001??? Does this car out of San Diego, Ca look Legit??? Does this car look a little strange to you guys too??? The owners also claiming that Saleens Numberede 001 are always Silver!!! We all know thats not true!! I'd post the link to the car but I don't know how to do this!!!

Here's the link to the auction...

2001 Saleen S281 "Claiming" S/N 01-0001

1. The 2001 was rated at 365, correct?

2. Saleen didn't put zeros in front of their bumper numbers that I know of?

3. Fuel pressure gauge wasn't a standard option? I thought it was boost and intercooler temperature?

4. Engine bay plaque appears too neat.

5. That's not the correct interior dash plaque, either!

I'm sure someone with a Saleen Book will chime in with the options and VIN listing. Make sure "286" matches 01-0001 in the registry? I'm thinking it is a very good clone, but not close enough?

On another note...wow, a lot of 99-04's popped up recently on eBay.

I'm betting this car is a fake. A relatively good fake, but a fake none the less.

I pretty much know most of the Saleens in the SD area & I've never previously seen this one on the street or @ any of the area car shows. Unless the owner keeps it locked away in his/her garage & thus never drives or shows it, but I would think if it was truly a unique Saleen he/she would at least occasionally want to show it off. The fact it has suddenly appeared on eBay pegs my internal skeptic meter.

The too perfect under hood ID plate & the missing ID plate on the dashboard are dead giveaways. Not to mention the ID # on the front bumper at first appears to be in an identical font to what Saleen actually uses, but those decals are available from other eBay vendors so that doesn't mean it's authentic. Add in the fact that HazeGray correctly pointed out that Saleen does not use zeros to fill in the blanks in multiple digit S/N's; they only use one zero for single digit S/N's such as Robert's Speedster. Not to mention the owner does not even mention that the car can be authenticated by Liz @ Saleen via it's VIN, tells me this auction is a scam.

I just checked the Saleen Book & indeed the VIN for 01-001 does end in 286. But without further documentation I still think this auction doesn't pass the smell test.

fuel press and oil temp were one set on n/a cars
boost and int cooler temp were another on boosted cars

it doesnt appear the rear x9s are offset for the rear. he's missing the s281 plaque on the back.

why is this series 2 blower painted black? werent the factory ones silver and aftermarket ones sold to public black?

i like how he bought saleen recaro rear seats and stitched the front stockers with the logo, lol

i dunno looks mighty fishy

hmm

this car is baffling me, i know the first 2 cars of the year usually steves or liz's or a press car are some time guiney pigs for some future saleen items but im not sure on this 1

All I have to say is if the the vin matches completly then??? The vin he lists in the auction's last three match the last three in the book for that car like someone else said.
Yes, some low num cars are giunea pigs but I would expect more of this mis match thing for a 99 supercharged car because it was a first year of the body style. Saleen would never ship a car with that plaque above the shifter or stich that in the seat like that. If it's legit, then it's missing some important items like the console plaque.
Someone run a car fax on it to see if the vin is legit. He could have bought a book and fabricated the whole thing.

Heh heh, I shot him this ---> "Chris Are you the original owner? Is that a series II or series IV? Any idea whats wrong with the fuel pressure guage? I thought Saleens came OEM with boost and intercooler temp not fuel? Do you have a letter of authenticity from Saleen? Thanks!"

We'll see what he replies...Dunno, good clone? Whats with the Saleen dash plaque stuck on the hood?, and Saleen sticker in window under the mirror?

Upon further review, that underhood ID plate does not appear legitimate. All of the Saleen ID plates I've seen for S281 Mustangs have only the final 6 digits of the VIN stamped on the left side of the plate with "S281" stamped on the right side.
This particular plate is missing the latter stamping & the VIN has the "1F" prefix of the FoMoCo s/n which is usually not included.

Therefore I remain dubious about the authenticity of this "Saleen."

His reply, guess the only way to know is call Liz....

"HELLO AND THANKS FOR YOUR INTREST IN MY CAR,I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER I BOUGHT THE CAR IN NOVEMBER 2005 A FRIEND TOLD ME IT WAS A SERIESIV SUPERCHARGER BUT I'M NOT SURE, THE CAR DID HAVE A INTERCOOLER TEMP GAUGE BUT THE GUY I BOUGHT IT FROM CHANGED IT AND DIDN'T CONNECT IT FOR SOME REASON I NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO CHANGE IT BACK,I DONT HAVE THE LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY FROM SALEEN BUT IT IS THE REAL THING YOU COULD CALL AND ASK LIZ SUMMER AT TEAM SALEEN SHE ASKED ME TO REGISTER THE CAR WITH THEM SO THEY COULD KEEP TRACK OF IT BECAUSE IT WAS A #001 CAR BUT NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO AND NOW I HAVE FINANCIAL PROBLEMS AND NEED TO SELL THE CAR THANKS FOR YOUR TIME,CHRIS

There are alot of questionable items on the car. The rear decklid has a supercharged emblem but, no S281 badge. It also has what appear to be the wrong front seats. My honest opinion is that this car has had some parts removed in tha past. Possibly a theft recovery. The correct blower I believe should be cast aluminum in color and not black. Wasn't the E-model the only one in black. The tag in the engine bay has the correct stamping but, it does look a little too nice to be from Saleen. The owners reserve is way more than the car is worth. I would be willing to bet this car was stolen or stripped at one time. I see alot of them these days!

There goes the bubble... :) the car is legit. Unless he cloned it right down to the serial #. I'm interested so I did some research. Here is a reply from Alex at Saleen...

"Most years cars 1-10 are R&D, Prototypes or press cars. That could explain the different color with the supercharger. We had a 2001 NOT a 2000 with the last six of the VIN 121286. The bumper number was 1. The car was Satin Silver with a Dark Charcoal Interior.

The 2000 car with bumper number 1 was a race car for Zippo Racing.

Hope that helps,

Alex"
