Early Style 289 Timing Cover

Pardon me for resurrecting this thread, but I'm having a related issue and Pony66 seems to have some of the info I'm seeking.

I'm working on a very early '64 289 with a C3OE-6059-B timing cover. It had an aftermarket stock style aluminum pump installed on it that was causing the water pump pulley to be about 3/8 of an inch too far forward. This created belt alignment issues with the WP, but the A/C and P/S pulleys line up correctly.

I have deduced that the pump is the incorrect one for this application, and I believe the iron one with no backing plate pictured above may be the one I need. The question is... where do you get one? All the iron ones I see at the parts houses have a backing plate.

.
Any help is appreciated. Here's a pic of the style of cover I'm working with for reference...

Hi,

I have an early May built 289 block with the same T/C cover. I'm running an EDL-8847 (polished). The cast finish is EDL- 8842.
Happy Trails!

I could be wrong, but doesn't the Power steering pump drive the Water pump on cars with Power steering? And the Alternator is driven straight off of the Crank pulley?

Wrong. :)

PS non-AC cars have the same alternator belt as standard, and the PS belt bypasses below the water pump directly to the crank pulley. Looks a little odd.

You'll have to find a used early timing cover. All 64 (5-bolt) engines, and all 65 (6-bolt) engines built before Change Level 7, had the aluminum water pump, with the timing cover forming the back half of the pump.

Drake is reproducing these, but they have hit a snag in production, and it'll be months before any of them hit the market.

Wished I found this two weeks ago...

I have been dealing with major belt alignment issues trying to run the 64 1/2 Eaton pump and crank pulleys with an alternator and an Autozone replacement water pump. It's shim city on the front of my engine!

I recently installed new heads, roller cam and roller lifters on my 289, and when I was putting all the old crap back on the front of the motor, nothing was lining up. I then installed my new headers and discovered I need to update to post 11/65 motor mounts/brackets so my headers don't contact the shock towers!

Thanks to 2+2GT, I have been dealing with Glazier Nolan for a few years now. I just received all the parts to update my motor mounts and 64 1/2 accessory drive to a 66 and happened to find this thread.

BTW, 2+2GT, tell Dan that YOU'RE the reason Glazier Nolan is selling stuff to a guy in Colorado!

Thanks to this thread, I now know what I wish I'd known a couple of weeks ago; that the later TC isn't going to work on my five bolt block!

I sent an email to Dan...I'm hoping for a graceful way to make the 66 Ford PS pump and bracket, along with the 66 alternator brackets and all the other stuff line up. I'm hoping that the stack height of the original cover is the same as the later cover, and that the correct water pump, or the Edelbrock 8842, will line up with all the other pulleys!
Sorry I'm asking for help after the fact!
All the Best,
Brian

Hi Brian,

I too, am still running a 5 bolt. I have been dealing with G/N (Fred) since I met him back in the early 80s at Carlisle. He and the G/N staff are very helpful, and knowledgeable. Even Gloria, knows a thing or two about this old junk. So, if any group can solve it, they can.
My rig was set-up with the OEM Eaton PS pump, and when I stareted my resto, I went with the polished version of that Eddy W/P (8847) and experienced no alignment problems. However, unlike what you are doing, I still retained my OEM GEN and all of it's "GEN" ambiance. I felt like, this is what made the "64.5 Mustang" stand out. Except for the power top, tube bass in the trunk, and a high energy ignition, I don't need more AMPs. If, it's the "more AMPs" you are looking for, there is a "GEN" that put's out 60 or so, that looks like the OEM. I'm thinking it will make all of your alignment issures "go away". That is, if that's where the alignment issues are eminating, between the ALT and the crank pully.
Do you just want to rid the block of the "bulky" GEN and brackets, or, is it more AMPs?
Good Luck!

Mixing different year parts can be an adventure. Converting to alternator is a classic example. I have a 65 engine, before Change Level 7, with the open-backed aluminum water pump. Installed on this is a complete 66 AC system. Even though it should be a direct fit, I have two extra washers as spacers to get good belt alignment. Good belt alignment is always a good idea, on a 289HP it's critical.

Sorry to bring this back up, but is there any way to convert an early style 289 with the oil filler tube to a newer style cover? In other words, I am working on one and have installed a new cover and forgot to check this. Is there a block off plate? or do you HAVE to buy a correct timing cover to cover the hole in the block?
