The rev limiter is embedded in the computer firmware. It cuts off fuel to each injector, one at a time, according to the firing order.

Here's a book that will get you started with how the Ford electronic engine control or "computer" works.

Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control 1988-1993 by Charles Probst :ISBN 0-8376-0301-3.

It's about $20 from Borders.com see http://www.amazon.com/ . Select boo...engine will quickly become a NO2 war story...

i had planned on getting a better balancer and have my local machine shop balance the entire rotating assembly. is the billet flywheel really necessary?? i will have eagle 4340 crank, Eagle 4340 H-beam rods, and some sort of forged pistons. so that ought to hold together at 6500-6800 shouldn't it? Also is the hypertech chip any good, all i would need it for is getting rid of that rev limiter.

The cheapest way to change the rev limiter is a used motorsport extender. You can usually find them for $250-350. I use a PMS to do my tuning and change my limiter. I set it to 6,800 and I shift at 6,700

I hope you're building a stroker and NOT wasting your money on a forged 306 assembly. And yes you will need a new flywheel with the assembly you're going to buy. Get an aluminum flywheel.

The weak link is the stock short block itself. If you're using a stock short block, you're wasting your money on that rotating assembly. The block is weaker than the stock rotating assembly. They routinely split down the middle at relatively modest HP levels.
