Hey yall I have a edelbrock 1405 and when I shut it down go in house 4 min and come back its flooded I have to hold it to the floor to get it to start anybody know why this is happining i set the floats were they need to be so thats not the problem any info would be great thanks.

I find mine turns over quite a bit before it starts when the engine is warm. It always starts, but it is hard to tell what is causing the delay compared to when it is cold. It may be raw fuel being pulled in for that breif period after the ignition is cut causing an over-rich state, or it may be the warm engine evaporates the remaining fuel in the system and it is slightly starved compared to when the choke is closed when it is cold.

Do you have a fuel filter on this beast ? On the other hand it may be vapor lock, in effect the fuel is boiling in the carb after you shut it down. Acts the same as if it's flooded when you go to start it. Try it again, but this time after you shut it down, wait the 4 minutes or so, then pull the aircleaner assembly off the carb and before trying to start it, work the throttle a few times while looking into the throttle bores to see if the accellerator pump is shooting fuel in. If not then thats a sure bet it's vapor locked. You're trying to crank it, mistakenly thinking it's flooded, but in reality, you have to crank it until the fuel pump fills the carb bowl back up before it'll start.

Yea I have A filter. You can crank all day but it want start untill you hold it wide open like its flooded ill try and see if its vapor locked but I dont think thats the prob but it might be so ill check thanks for the info.

Yeah, I had the same problem and I was also told this about a year ago. Basically the manifold heats up to evaporate the gas and which will cause a rich mixture. I bought a thicker carb gasket and it has helped out since.

The thing is that I used to run a phonolic spacer and it did the same thing even now with the air gap the carb stays cool to the touch even the intake stays cool enough to hold on to so I dont see how it would be evaporating.

if you are really getting too much fuel, then start by jetting down, lowering the float level, and reducing fuel pressure. do you by chance have an electric fuel pump in the system? the edelbrock does need some tuning of the system for it to run right.

Vapor Lock also happens in cool climates. It's also altitude related. The fuel RVP also has an effect. Gasoline is produced in 9.8 and 7.0 vapor pressure (might be others too) depending on location and time of the year. The lower VP gas usually isn't produced til later though for summer time temps.

well I tried to see if its vapor locking and it sprayed out the accellerator but it could be evaporating maybe its needing fuel the psi is at 5.5 I do live on a mtn in Tennessee so it stays real cold in the winter so they might run a another kind of fuel as for the timing its at 10 degrees thanks for the info

Sorry to start this topic back up but im still having this problem. I know its rich because it blows black smoke on restarts. The thing is I bout a new carb the first few days it started just fine infact better then ever then it started doing this and the linkage was bent like it had been dropped so I took it back and got a new one every thing was cool for a few more days then it started it again like a gasket or a seal or something is there any gasket or seals that I could check never the less somethings wrong and I cant stand it any info would be great.
