edelbrock shocks won't fit on my 68

Almost have the front end back together and I can't get the upper shock mount over the end of the shocks The body is too big to slide up from the bottom and there is no way to twist the end back and forth like you normally do. The shock mounts upside down from traditional. I'm starting to think you need to use a 65/6 shock mount to get a little more wiggle room on the top. Anyone else run into this? Ideas?

To add insult to injury I have an appointment for an alignment in 9 hrs

Well....I have IAS in the 65 and the shock tower cap mounts was not a problem. Have you considered simply opening up the cap a little bit more with a grinder?

Do you mean that the top of the shock is too wide? I once had that problem on a Chebie and just ground down the end of the shock eyelet area.

I thought about grinding the cap, but I'd have to remove a LOT of material. Looking at the cap, it looks a lot smaller (shorter)than a 65 cap, but the bolt pattern has to be the same because the springs are the same diamater.
2ndMustang, the AIS has the thin end pointing down so you have to slip the shock body onto the cap. Koni's, KYB, etc have the body mount to the spring perch and you slip the cap over the thin end with no problem.

I have a 67 with the IAS shocks... I had to remove the shock tower cap, and slide the shock in. Then, remove the top shock mount pin, put the cap back on and slide the mount pin back in. A total PIA, but it works.

Let me know if you come up with anything different.

Done.. PITA! Okay this post is for the next guy who's looking to put these in a 68 and doing a search.

Like Red50h said, you have to press (or beat) the upper cross-piece out of the bushing, slip the shock tower cap over the end, and press the cross-piece back in place. Mine came with black cross-pieces installed which didn't fit the bolt pattern on the cap. (guess when I discovered this.. ) There are two silver cross-pices in the packs of hardware that are shorter and line up with the holes in the cap. Lastly, the shock body rubs on the cap on all sides, so I'm not sure what good the upper bushing is going to do. The car is back on the ground but I haven't driven it yet. Can't wait for tomorrow.
