i can get a ported and polished upper/lower intake manifold, 19lb injectors, Throttle body, wiring harness, computer, Polished valve covers, and fuel rails...for $750. I wouldnt need anything else other than sensors (and the right dist) to convert to EFI right?
Not bad....but if you have performance goals down the road the only thing there that is reusable in my opinion is the harness and computer. I'm not a fan of ported an polished stock intakes when there is such a large supply of good aftremarket ones available at reasonable prices in the resale market since the performance crowd always has to have the latest and greatest. I personally like and run the GT-40 intake and that one is marginal these days but I only have a 300RWHP goal and it is sufficient for that.
Agrred. If you aren't looking to make a good amount of hp, then that sounds good to me. But not if you plan to get rid of it later. You just paid 750 buck for a bunch of parts you need. Can't you get stock parts at a junk yard cheaper though? I mean no one is satisfied to the amount of hp they have.
I think that is way to high for those parts. Like the others said the harness and computer are worthwhile. Shop around I bet you find better prices on the other stuff.
I agree with all on this for both future add-ons and price. I was lucky and found a 40,000 mile totalled '93 GT for $1000 a few years ago. I not only got all the stock efi stuff, I also got a T-5 with it. I was able to sell many of the parts off the car that I did not need to recoup much of the cost of the GT making it an even better value, plus sold the shell for $100 to a wrecking yard.
In addition to the parts needed for the conversion you may also need new fuel lines (including return), fuel pump, inertia switch (rollover safety switch), fuel filter, coil (or modify efi coil harness to the original coil), mass air (if appropriate for the year of the computer), and starter solenoid (not sure on this one?).
One thing to note is the computer is setup for a late model firing order, and your cam is probably setup for the early order. This can work, but gives you a little uneven idle, and possibly gives you a little lower MPG. That being said there are plenty of guys doing it successfully. Take a look at this article for someone that did this.
