EGR Ports In Heads? ***Pics***

Are these ports on the heads supposed to be blocked off with gaskets when re-installing the lower intake? I pulled my lower intake because I had a small oil leak from the rear and wanted to re-polish it and noticed they were blocked off on each head. I do not run a smog pump, but I do still have an EGR valve. What are the ill affects of doing this, if any? I just want to make sure I get it right when I re-install the lower. Thanks!

Possible code 33 & pinging. The EGR has some very positive benfits and no negative effects.

Here's a short tech description of the EGR function that may be useful.

The EGR system has a vacuum source (line from the intake manifold), a computer operated electrical vacuum regulator(EVR), the EGR valve and the passages in the heads and intake manifold that route exhaust gas to the EGR valve. The computer uses RPM, Load, and some other factors to tell the vacuum regulator to pass vacuum to open the EGR valve. The EGR sensor tells the computer how far the EGR valve is open. Then computer adjusts the signal sent to the EGR vacuum regulator to hold, increase or decrease the vacuum.

The EGR shuts off at Wide Open Throttle (WOT), so it has minimal effect on performance. The addition of exhaust gas drops combustion temperature, increases gas mileage and reduces the tendency of the engine to ping.
 
That would explain my engine pinging at anything other than base timing. The only reason I pulled it was because I had a small oil leak in the back of the intake. I guess it's a good thing I pulled it and noticed the ports being blocked. Thanks for help!

Those gasket block offs will eventually heat up and fall apart anyway. As Jrichker says there are no negative affects but have some positive affects if hooked up.
Now is also a good time to try to line up that 1250 Felpro gasket up a little better. You might have to notch the corners of the gasket where the gaskets hook on to the head gaskets to hold it in place.
Also check to see if the gasket is trimmed in the water ports so it does not restrict flow.

It only has about 700 miles on it right now and everything is new on it. When my engine builder built it I think he just assumed I wasn't running any EGR stuff, but no biggy though. I am going to trim those 1250's down a little bit to make sure I am taking advantage of Thumper's port job. I noticed the water ports were not trimmed, but I was going to ask about it. You beat me too it! :) Thanks again guys!

I thought the EGR gets vacuum from behind the strut tower, and not the back of the intake? Thats the way mine is hooked up... Jrichker, is mine hooked up worng? Hooked it up that way according to a diagram Tmoss made...

The EVR (electroinc vacuum regulator) gets its vacuum feed from the back of the upper intake manifold. The EVR does indeed mount on the rear of the passenger side strut mount. It in turn provides computer regulated vacuum to the EGR valve.
 
Ok, mines messed up then. My EGR gets vacuum from behind the strut tower, which, if I follow, should actually go to the intake. Then from the intake to the EGR, correct?
