how hard is it to change the egr tube. I finally figured that thats where the exhuast leak was coming from. is this a job that is easy to do, or is it going to be a pain in the ass.
pain in the ass most likely. The header side usually rusts itself on there and the rust acts liek its welded on there and its a pain to get any kind of tools in there. Depending on how yours broke it may be easyer
Actually, it's no problem. Get yourself a crow's foot in the correct size. Then you will need to use extensions to get down there. And you will probably only be able to move it about 1/3 of a turn each time. But really no problem.
Hit it with PB Blaster. Work on it when cool - like after sitting overnight (so the header bung is not hot/expanded - also so you dont get burnt). When you remove the EGR end, make sure you are loosening - it's upsidedown. If it's really bad, you might need a breaker bar to get the nuts started, but I doubt that will be necessary.
Get your replacement part from 50Resto for about $50 under their exhaust/accessories category (or anywhere else you can find). It's more like $100 from the dealer.
If you have to wait for the part, you could get some caps. Home Depot has something that will fit. Or you could just put a penny under the old fitting to cap it off. Someone said you can melt the penny and have it drop into your cats and screw those up if you do that, but I ran mine all summer w/o issue like that. (BTW, depending on the leak, you may be able to patch it with that exhaust patch tape.)
got the egr tube...31 bucks. I got a guy that works at the local ford dealer, he gets me cost plus 10%. I am going to atempt doing it myself till i can't figure it out then i will wax my brothers car so he will help me. what exactly is a crows foot. sounds like a fictional tool in a sci-fi movie. how much is one, and is it really that nessary to have one.
I have this exact same problem. Mine is split in the back and leaking, so I will be buying one fairly soon to fix it once and for all (JB Weld isn't holding any longer either). The tube isn't that hard to change, but in my case with the new intake, the thing wouldn't clear by about 1/16" (too long) and it took me way longer than I am proud to admit to get it into place. Good luck with the install, it should be a snap.
