how much power do u really gain? i have an electric fan right now hooked up to a toggle and i like it but sometimes when i first turn it on my idle surges baddly...so i was wonderign if i just put my flex fan on will i loose enough power to notice?? will the car run cool? i never had the flex fan on since i built the 347..

i was thinking bout that too.....i was also wanting the lincoln mark VIII fan cause i heard its cfm is great but was wondering if it draws a ton of power too.....i replaced my battery this weekend with an exide deep cycle battery (blue top) supposed to be like the optima yellow..and it has actually helped the idle alot doesnt really surge my voltage stays around 13.5 volts on idle now still wanna replace my fan though..i have 2 small fans out of a daewoo and only one works so it doesnt cool ti very well anymore ( they were freebees..had to try them ya know) i can get my hands on a great working lincoln fan for $90

Try ebay for the Mark Viii fan. I got mine for $25.00 + shipping in January. Once my controller comes in, I plan to mount it up and run it off the stock alternator until I get the 3G (maybe this fall?).

I checked last week for someone else and they were all right around $40 - $50 dollars + shipping. I got lucky with mine.

One day this year I'll do the 3G.. I am trying not to jump around as much as I work on the car though. I am picking an area and staying until I finish or am happy.... So cooling first and the charging, then chasis, etc finally ending in at the motor in a few years.

thats a good strategy...i kinda did the same thing except i did motor first made sure i was completly happy...to how much i could afford then did suspension...then exterior...i just kinda tried the cheapest way out with the cooling and its working but not the way i want it or am happy with....but last on my list is the interior that wont be for a while though since im tapped outta$$ right now...the cool thing bout the convertibles is that most of the time you run into slow ones because they weigh so much and most ppl expect them slow....so if you make yours fast...the look on corvette, gto, ls1, cobra owners when you blow there doors off is just unbelievable....and not to mention if your a late night street racer like myself...u can make some good $$ with it....the bad side to a drop top...is when ur at the strip and u runs 11's or 12's and dont have a ***K cage your gone...i know first hand...and im not about to put a full cage in my car and look like im driving a sandrail while im crusing

This is exactly the reason that I chose a convertible. Once I am all done with it, I'll be very happy and many a nice cars will be very shocked.

If you come across one that isn't too bad looking, make sure you post about so I can consider one.

rothfuss - careful with the MarkViii/DC and the stock 65A alternator. I didn't have enough alternator with a 95A -- and my SPAL's don't pull quite as much current as the MkViii is capable of pulling when the controller calls for lots of fan.

Flex fans are loud, have been proven to take more power than a clutch fan and are dangerous. If it comes apart it's probably going through the hood. If you are working under the hood and accidentally manage to punch the flex fan, you are fugged.

I know I am going to toast it.. There is a plan behind that though. You see to get approved funding from the wife, the car must require a serious repair or not run correctly. I will upgrade I promise... It just has to be sneaky sometimes.

Then just unhook the excitor wire from it and say it's not charging.:rlaugh:

hey sro i dont think there will ever be a full cage that will good on a vert...maybe a 4 point if you paint it the same color as your car....or something like that..but a full 10point cage will just look retarded....so thats something to consider when building you combo..dont over kill it to the point where u will need the 10 point unless you dont care about racing at the track and just using it for the street...keep it above 11.99's and the 4 point will be good...or else ull need the cage, harness, fire extinguisher, driveshaft loop, fireproof jacket,etc...i dont even know what else they will throw at ya!

Let's hope I don't get that fast... My car is destined only for the backroads of Lower Michigan. Fast enough for trouble, but quiet enough to not wake the neighbors.

Edit: Spelling

You can also look for a Taurus fan. I got mine for $30 or $35 plus shipping on e-bay. Are these fans okay w/ the stock alt.? I thought it would be too much for the stock alt. I got a 130 amp alt. on ebay as well for a good price. Haven't had time to put either on yet. I'll do the alt. first, then the fan.

EDIT: Sorry, I should have read all replies before I posted. I just saw your later post RE: strategy to finance your upgrades. I should have known better, being in a situation w/ a wife and 14-month old baby. LOL "Don't just repair . . . upgrade!"

yea i hear ya sro...im kinda thinking about buyin a stock 5.0 notch and swapping drivetrains and just making it a track car and using the vert as just a cruiser....but i cant let go of the power int he drop top and the faces of the victims
