After washing my engine bay, I noticed an electrical part (silver round thing)that was hanging by a wire just behind the steering pump and ignition coil. The part is about half the length of a AA battery and has a single wire coming out of it. The single wire leads to the grouping of many wires just behind the distributor. There is a grey connector in the middle of this single wire that would allow the part to be disconnected.

Now there is something that may give this part away to someone:

The round silver part has a small piece of metal attached to it and it appears as though it was attached to something before it snapped. The part number on the silver thing is FIFS.

The part is still connected to the wiring, BUT is no longer connected to the correct area. It does appear that it was welded or bolted somewhere, but the metal bracket has snapped. I cannot locate the exact original location, but the wire length is only about 9-12 inches.

I will try to take a picture.

Can anyone post a picture of the engine bay (close up) of the area just behind the distributor across to the area behind the steering pump?

I'll take a look again in the morning and see if I can't find any more identifying information.

Thanks.

that part attaches right behind/below your coil, kinda like at the end of the drivers side valve cover, on the back of the bracket your coils mounted to..its some kinda resistor/capacitator I believe...
A 8mm or so screw attaches it...the little bracket on it must have rusted thru and it fell off the coil bracket...

That is the noise supressor for the coil i believe. Turn on your radio, how does it sound with the car running?

The "noise supressor" is still connected properly, just broke off from the bolt area. I checked the radio and it is fine with the car running (no static, whinning, or anything).

I will probably call the local Ford dealer and see if they car order me a new part. The old part can disconnect easily I think, so the new part should have the bracket already attached.

Thanks for the info. No wonder I couldn't locate the original location last night.

I've still got the stock coil at 132,000 miles, so it's probably past due to be replaced with an MSD Blaster coil.
