What items need to have a CARB or EO number to be completely legal on a 87-93 5.0? -- No wink, wink - nudge, nudge pass stuff - just technical REAL good to go with no concerns. -- Cold air kit? MAF? Throttle body? EGR spacer? Intake manifold? Valve springs? Lifters? Rocker arms? Headers? Underdrive pullies? Electric fans? H pipes or X pipes? Rear gears? Cams? Computer chips? etc.... Are there ANY mods that are completely legal without an exemption number? Is there a source to find all the emmission exemption numbers in a handy location for 87-93 5.0's?

Basically, NO. Per the books, anything (not from the factory) that goes on the car must have a CARB sticker. I think even the K&N filters are supposed to have them.

With that said, there are many things you can do, and still pass emissions. The only time you will have trouble is if the guy working the test equipment has a hardon for Mustangs, and wants to mess with you.

Most of the time if you pass the sniffer, no one cares.

I would love to see the list of CARB legal mods as well. That would be great!

Basically, ANYTHING you change other than stock supposed to have a carb number to it. Few places i been to around here won't even bother looking at your car even if you have carb stickers unless the carb numbers are actually STAMPED on the parts.

God I love living in the southern backwoods. We don't even have safety inspections anymore. Basically if it has four wheels and nothing is falling off of it hitting other cars it's legal.

the last time i went into smog the guy looked at the headers and made a comment but when i showed him the carb number he said ok. i dont have carb numbers for my intake manifold, tb or egr spacer but he didnt check. didnt check for the carb numbers on the msd stuff either even tho i have teh sticker under the hood. didnt say anything about the electric fan or my under drives i had at the time. didnt say anything about my intake spacer, maf or larger injectors. i think he knew i had gears, or figured the trans was slipping cause when he ran the test, the mph didnt match the engine rpm for stock (cause of lower gears) he asked me if the tires were slipping on the rollers. i said no and he just hit a button on the computer and went to the next part of the test. i passed with flying colors and he was shocked. i have a sc now but it has a carb number so he better not say anything

I called a few manufacturers for parts and asked about EO #'s and was told a few things - direct replacement parts from the aftermarket are ok (nothing needed). Throttle bodies and EGR spacers are ok (nothing needed), Underdrive pullies are ok (nothing needed), Hotter coil is ok, lifters are ok, rockers are ok, etc... Not ok unless there is an EO # are cams, headers, cats, and items like that. Just curious - I have tried to stay legal with my car even though there is no real problem in VA away from the big cities but I am sure it is coming soon enough. Funny thing is that some manufactures were saying that stickers were in boxes and supposed to be put on the car - I have found that I did not get a sticker for the E303 cam in the box which is clearly listed as 50 state legal and the Edelbrock Peformer 5.0 is as well but that was purchased used. Are stickers only required in CA? or in all states.

The last smog tech I went to gave me grief about my Edelbrock performer intake, and I could not blame him. I showed him the paperwork included with the intake that says it's a Direct Replacement and thus no CARB required. Unfortunately, Edelbrock did not bother to put a part number on the upper to match it up with the p/n on the pprwrk. The p/n cast on the lower doesn't help because it doesn't match up to the paperwork.
