Are you looking for 400hp at the flywheel or at the wheels?

My setup is a 347, Trick Flow twisted wedge heads, 10.5:1 compression, 282S comp cams solid flat tappet cam, 1 5/8 long tube headers, edelbrock air-gap performer RPM intake, and it is rated for 450hp at the flywheel. Sure feels like it has that much too, but I can't say without a dyno. It's probably more like 400hp flywheel or 335 at the wheels. I can tell you I do LOVE my combo though.

With a goal of only 400 HP, 185s are all he needs. 225s are way overkill for such a mild engine, and the port flow will suffer everywhere in the range except the top end, even if he strokes it to 347.

My suggestion would be a 331 stroker (3.25x4.030). There are so many heads that could achieve that goal, it would take too long to try to list them. Even stock 351W heads can manage enough flow to get 400hp. If you choose after market heads, stick with something in the 1.9 to 2.02 intake size range, and 1.6 exhaust. Make the compression between 9.5 and 10:1 and use a cam comparable to the B303 FMS cam. Use 1 5/8 headers and the 600 cfm 4 barrel of your choice on a hi rise DP intake to finish it off. That's my equivalent to a "pinch" of salt and "seasoning to taste".
 
I talked to the AFR folks saturday at Rt 66 Raceway Jolliet ILL................ he indicated 400 HP was relatively easy to reach WITHOUT stroking ................ he said 165"s , would be the best choice without stroking ............... 185's with stroking ................................ BUT he didnt give me the rest of the recipe ...........................


BTW .................. I'm talking 400 at the flywheel ....................... that should be enough for me in a 68 FB ......................................... I just wanted more "go" than the 70 Torino GT 351C I had ................ "back in the day"
 
personally i would build a 331 stroker, using this combo;

afr 185 or windsor sr heads
comp 280 magnum or 268 extreme energy cam
weiand stealth intake
edelbrock 750 cfm carb
1.6 roller rockers
a good full length tri-y header with a 1 5/8" primary tube. a 4-1 header can be used if you choose, either way you want a 3" collector.

225s are too much for just about any 347, definitely not one looking to be in the 400 hp range too.

185s would be more appropriate.

If you are willing to stroke the motor to 331 or 347 getting to 400 will be easier. 185s, Performer Air Gap, ~700 cfm carb of choice, headers, 2.5" exhaust, and mid-range cam wwould do it.

With a normal 302, you'd need a more aggressive cam to get there N/A. A supercharger would be a good way to go as well.
 
400 at the flywheel is reasably obtainable with a 331 or 347. Top it off with a set of AFR 185s or TFS track heat heads whatever the budget permits. Edelbrock Airgap or Stealth intake and any number of cams depending on where you want your power. Top it off with a 650+ cfm carb and you should be good. Long tubes with 2.5 inch exhaust and you should be set. I personally would lean towards a roller block but that is just me.
The one Huge perk of stroking is that your torque will come in a lot lower. A lot of these dyno queen 400hp 306ci motors are just peak at 7500+ rpm. Yes it definately can be done it is just not a practical engine for a street machine. 400HP out of a stock displacement 302 is not that easy to get either. You will still have to raise the CR and get a monster of a cam which then makes it a chore to tool around town in.

Do you have a preferance between 331 and 347 with a goal of 400 HP ? what are the advantages/disadvantages for each ???
 
Before you spend any money, go over to small block ford tech dot com, (*******) and read up over there....

sbf tech dot com should be required reading for anyone building a Ford motor. I would personally recommend talking to Jay Allen @ Camshaft Innovations before you spend a dime on anything. If you listen to the guys at sbf tech and/or Jay you will get everything you are looking for.
 
I kind of like my combo. It is a roller block 302 bored 30 over. I have a little over 400 at the rear wheels. Of course this is with EFI and a Vortech supercharger that has a smaller pulley putting out 10 lbs of boost. Nothing like the feeling when the boost kicks in. :D

For my combo I went with AFR 165's at the recommendation of AFR. I wish now that I would have use 185's. I want to stroke the engine at some point. For now I was concerned that I would have to notch the pistons for the 185's to work. In addition on the dyno I only ran it up to 5200 rpm. I think there is still more in my combo but I don't want to destroy the engine trying to find it.
 
Here's my combo. Made 325 HP / 317 TQ to the wheels (through 5spd and 9" axle).

Box-Stock Edelbrock TFS Twisted Wedge Heads
DSS Racing "Base Bullet" 9.6:1 compression shortblock
Lunati 51017 roller cam (218 / 228 duration @ .050 with .536 lift)
Ford Racing 1.6:1 roller rockers
Underdrive pulleys
Windage tray
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake (the old one, new one should be even better)
Edelbrock 750cfm carburetor (recommend using something different)
Hooker 1 5/8" long tube headers to 3 x 2.5" X-pipe, 2.5" tail pipes
MSD ignition with 15 initial, 36 total degrees

You can hit 400 easy with a swap to Air-Gap style intake or getting a little more aggressive with the cam. I also didn't get the intake and heads port matched which will make a difference as well.

I'd post the dyno curve but my website is acting finicky... Torque curve is really flat with a peak at about 4000 RPM. Power peaks at 6500 RPM. Overall very streetable and tractable engine.
