Engine combo & gear ratio suggestions?

I have a 302 that was rebuilt by PO - Edelbrock Performer intake and 600 CFM Edelbrock Performer carb, with Performer cam (mild). Has Hooker competition headers, with 3" collectors, adapted to 2-1/2" dual exhaust. I have wide-ratio Toploader (1st gear 2.78) and 9" rear with 2.75 open. I have 26.1" tall tires. The overall ratio with 1st gear is 7.65. I normally don't drive on highways much and most of the time, I go no more than 55-60 mph on way to work. If I go to 3.50, the overall ratio would be 9.73. Would that be ideal with the engine powerband geared toward low-end torque? Or should I stick with 2.75?

I may try 1/4 mile someday... I've never done it.

I would appreciate your expertise & advice.

I think 3.50's would work best in your application. I've heard from several sources that you want your 1st gear and rear gear to multiply out to 10, 9.73 is pretty darn close. I don't know if that theory has any real truth behind it though....

yes, 3.50's are perfect for your combo, and your driving style.

With the wide ratio and such lo-po parts, I would use a 3.25.
If you had an auto or close ratio, the 3.50s would be better.
My wide ratio with low gears and lo-po parts was very disappointing to drive, the engine was in it's power band for a very short time. More like driving a truck than a performance car.
The 3.25s would feel like a world of difference from what you have now.
You would also save some of the 'hit' in fuel economy.

Edit: If more rpm friendly parts are anticipated in the future, then I have to agree with the 3.50s. 3.25s for 'status quo'.
