Does anyone know if an engine crossmember is used on a 1964 - 1966 Mustang with a 6-cylinder motor? I'm speaking of the large bar that runs under the oil pan and connects near each motor mount. My 66 convertible with a 200ci 6 does not have one. I have seen other 6's at car shows that do have them, but I have also heard from other owners who do not have them. Which is correct?

Wondering if not having this crossmember is asking for trouble. I'm sure it would be better to put one in, but it has proven a challenging part to find.

You will definitely want to get the bar and install it. I had 2 65 6cyl coupes (which are significantly stiffer than the convertibles) and they both had the cross members. Remember that the most popular description for stiffness of our cars is something to the effect of “a wet noodle is stiffer”. The brace helps tie together the lower frame rails and lower arms of your suspension. Without it there you will most likely end up with alignment problems due to frame rail flex.

Definably recommended…

P.S. Make sure that you use the correct bolts to hold that cross member on as well. The correct bolts have a cone shape that helps position the cross member (similar to the lug nuts on your wheels).

Cheers,

Rufus

As a follow-up: If you are not looking for originality and your MO is overkill like mine.

You can get a modified one that will tie everything together nicely. (scroll down about half way)

http://www.cobraautomotive.com/new products.htm

Not only does it tie into the original mounting holes but it bolts into the lower suspension points as well.

If this is a daily driver that does not see any “spirited open track or auto-x duty” this is definitely overkill but it is an alternative if you can not locate an original piece.

Cheers,

Rufus.

Thanks Rufus. I wasn't aware of the "Road Racing Front Crossmember" until you posted the link (btw, I assume where they say, "includes eccentric bolts" they are referring to the bolts you mention). I'm thinking this piece will go great on my '66 GT with a 351W. Then I'll take the GT's stock crossmember and move it to the convertible. Should be compatible, eh?
