Ive been fighting an intermitent problems with my 92 5.0L, it seems to completely shut down while driving and will not start up until I let it sit for about 30 mins. Strong smell of fuel and turns over really easy but never fires. I changed the ignition module, it has fairly new cap, wires, rotor and plugs, new coil, all the ignition components around the steering column have been replaced. I ran the codes and get 31 53 and 96. The car also surges at more than 1/2 throttle.

Let me know what you think.

Do you have spark when it wont start? The coil and PIP could have gone south.

the surging might be from code 53. and 96 means that at some point the FP circuit lost power when it should not have.

Good luck.

Just a little throw in ... "new" only means no one "owned" it before you ... doesn't necessarily mean good.

Is it still ignition related ... I believe your "new" module is the culprit

You smell plenty of fuel, but 96 relates to lack there of

maybe the ignition switch is going out? its like 10 bux and chances are it will go out soon, as these cars are up there in age, i had to replace mine, and i was stumped on why it fired up right away then died immediately.
