is it a good idea to paint a used engine?

or does it have to be apart before its painted?

i read somewhere about gaskets breaking down faster and stuff if you paint it after its put together.

help me out cause i want to buy some VHT and get it painted black. but i don't want to tear apart the engine.

also how many cans will i need to paint the whole engine?

Paint the motor, it will prevent it from rusting and looking like a chevy...

Spray the motor down with some brake clean or another non residue cleaner first, you can tape off anythign you don't want paint on. While I prefer to pain everything while it is apart since I do not like the painted bolt look, some paint is better then none IMO. You should have to worry about hurting the small areas of gaskets that stick out.

I use Duplicolor Engine Enamel, but the VHT will hold up fine. Gloss Black with a coat of clear will look great and hold up well. 1 can will paint the block, oil pan and heads with no problem, put it on nice easy thin coats.

We were in Honolulu last year, I rented a turbo Porshe and drove up and snorkeled at Sunset Beach good times...:nice:

Por 15 has an engine paint kit. Best of all it can be painted with a brush. So no overspray on pre assembled motors.
