Engine Problems and more

I recently just had some problems coming from my 5.0 I have tried to figure out the problem myself but I cannot tear the engine apart to find the problem. Best place to ask is here.

My engine has just started making alot of noise from the heads area/near the back. Sounds like swoosh type sound on the driver side and a slap/tick noise on the passenger side. I guess what I am wondering is if it could be a bad valve or even a bad pushrod. It has just gotten worse everyday and now when I am around 4500 RPMs with my foot slightly into the throttle it likes to throw out a backfire. When I let of the throttle and let it coast in gear it backfires even more. The oil lvl is fine and I have good oil pressure. The coolant light is fading in and out while I drive, and does not stay on constant or stay off.

How many miles is on the engine? Have you takin the rpms farther than usual? Recently messed with timing?

To make sure it isn't just a header problem take the car out and bog it down in 5th gear. Slowly squeeze the throttle and see if the noise becomes louder. If the sound gets much louder as the throttle position increases then most likely it is just the header(s). Other than that it is really hard to tell what the problem is without hearing the car in person.
