engine problems

I'm selling my old engine, anyone know what these symptoms would mean?
loss of power above 3000 RPM with loud knocking sound.
0-60 in 3 minutes
smoke billowing from tailpipe (started long after loss of power)
idle sounds great, only problems above 3000 rpm
metal shavings in the oil

mechanic said it wasn't firing on 3 cylinders and that the rods disconnected from the pistons. he said it happens when you drive long periods of time (6hours) over 60 miles an hour on a 3 speed trany. Is this true? is there a danger of hurting the car? That sounded kinda stupid but he said he did the timing, and he tried changing wires, plugs, cap and rotor and it won't help, he said the engine is dead.

any ideas?

sounds dead to me, but driving it over 60 with a 3 speed has nothing to do with it. Any mechanic that makes a statement like that and would even try changing wires and doing a tune up on a motor that makes a loud knocking noise, and has shavings in the oil needs to find another profession. And you my friend need to find another mechanic.

I also agree with the others, that "mechanic" is an idiot. Rods disconnected from the pistons? Nooooooooooo. Broken rods? possibly. spun bearings? possibly. Bearings worn completely out? Most likely. Time for it to be rebuilt, or pulled out , dis-assembled to see if it CAN be rebuilt. If it's in that bad a condition, you probably need to be looking for another motor to swap in, or one that's in better condition to be rebuilt.
