The stock 289 shuddered at idle, and now that I have the performer rpm cam in, at idle with the hood open, I can see the air cleaner just rocking from side to side in tune to the engine lope with the cam. Is this amount of shudder acceptable? It runs fine at higher rpm, its just shaky as hell at idle around 900 rpm

yeah it should have a decent amount of shake to it- I had my idle set at 750rpm with that cam.
Here is a short video clip of my car at start up and idle, it should get you an idea, the engine appears to be pretty smooth but if you saw it with your naked eye there is some shake there.
