I just purchased this '89 Mustang GT about a month ago. It seems to run great, but the temperature gauge and tach don't work. I just want to make sure I'm not hurting the engine. I drove it around about an hour today (80 degrees outside) getting in and out of the gas and then put it back in the garage. Three hours later I went out and the intake manifold was still very hot to the touch (hood had been closed)...is this normal or should it be a lot cooler? Also, is my stock temperature gauge electric or manual? How often should you replace your termostat? Thanks for the help.

Get a real gauge - your stock gauge is about as accurate as the rest of ours (which do work). You definately do want a gauge.

The stocker temp gauge is electric. The sender is behind the dizzy in the lower intake manifold.

If you dont know the pedigree of the car, I would replace the stat at some point here, just so you know what you have. I prefer the Mr. Gasket line of stats.

those guages suk anyway, i have totally chased problems that weren't there just cause the guages are so inaccurate, i vote just get autometer replacements on ebay and dont even try to fix the stock ones

also, it is totally normal for the intake to be hot if the hood was closed a few hours after if its a normal day outside, expecially if your car is a dark color, unless you heard pinging while driving it and then coolant boiled out once you parked it, i wouldn't worry,

thermostats should last a long time, they are cheap and easy to replace though, i run a 180' thermo and it works perfect, though my car is still pretty stock

Heck yeah! I love this website. The car sounds and runs fine. I'm looking at Autometer gauges right now....Im just going to replace every gauge and then add some! I will order a new thermostat when I order the gauges. Thanks for the help.
