Like all things these must also wear out. My question is, how does one test or know when its time to change? Now I'm talking about a time before they fail completely. I'm thinking that every full throttle shift has to be staining these mounts (and I've done a lot of those ) and would like to test their integrity. No sense in just throwing new parts in if the're not needed.

Since they're rubber, you'll see cracking and possible separation from the metal attachment points. It's pretty obvious when they're bad. The cracks don't take much to expand once they start.

Yes and my experience with other cars is that you will feel vibrations when accelerating. That is the motor mounts getting hard and vibrating into the cabin. This is why I would never go with poly or solid mounts.

if you do replace them never put a solid tranny mount. race shop told me it can cause broken tailshaft on the tranny.

My understanding was prothane was fine for the engine but not for the trans so I replaced the engine ones with prothane and have no issues like roughness. When the transmission one is changed I'll go with stock rubber.

The 5.0 mounts are much easier to change the the 4.6L, but they are almost the same set up. I just did my drivers side on my 96 Cobra. I could see that it was split in half, and when driving it after the new one was in place, my vibration went away. The trans mounts go bad more often, in my experience, those are simply to change also. I have installed rubber ones, and poly ones, and have never noticed a difference, so I would recommend a cheaper stock replacement one.
