I'm getting rid of my A/C and don't want to pay a shop to evacuate the refrigerant. What's the best way to do it without getting refrigerant everywhere?

*disclaimer* I will not discharge my A/C system with the information provided in this thread. It is for informational purposes only. Any lack of refrigerant in my A/C system in the near future is nothing more than a strong coincidence. *disclaimer*

I used to work at a Valvoline for 5 years and they used to evacuate for free it only takes like 5 mins of their time.

Yep, most will do it free of charge…and seeing as the R12 is quite costly…they are more than happy to keep it (you don’t have a choice anyways…that's the reason they do it for free)!

Take some rags and put the around the a/c, take a wrench and open the line untill it just starts to hiss, close the hood and walk away.In about a 1/2 hour it will be done. (you didnt hear that from me though)

My situation's a little more complicated since I'm in Germany. I'll try to find a place that'll do it for free, but if not - I'm going to take 90bluecoupe's suggestion.
Thanks.

r-134 became standard in 1994. anything prior to that was r-12.
