I have a 65 coupe with a 289. While driving on the highway the other day, the valve on the 7 cyliner decided to drop down into the cylinder causing the piston to stick, blowing two large holes into the cylinder wall and disentegrating the piston itself. I found shavings and pieces all through the block, other cylinders and oil pan. Needless to say, the block is sitting on the corner......

These are some of the performance parts I had on it: 289 Edelbrock Performer intake, 600 cfm Edelbrock 4 bbl carb., Hooker Headers, Pete Jackson gear drive, MSD distributor/ignition/blaster coil, Delta Flowmaster exhaust, 9" rear w/3.55 gears and a C4 tranny (although I want a T5 or 6). So the question is, what is the best route to go for bringing this pony back to life?? I want to use as many of the parts I have. I figured 300 HP+ would make me happy and I have about 2k to spend. I'm guessing I go for a long block.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to shop, what to get, and any experience with crate engines?

Thanks for the help!

That bag holds about 3/4 of cylinder 3's piston. The rest was a fine dust all over the inside of the motor.

I guess you should have used forged pistons.

It would have been easier to find the pieces. They would have been bigger.

not only have i seen a piston disintegrate, but i have seen the results of a bb/fa motor after it popped a blower at 1000ft! the nut behind the wheel made things worse because he kept his foot on the throttle "because the motor was still running!!". needless to say he put a new bullet in the car, and the scrap metal that was left was, well.........scraped.

I have never seen a piston disentegrate and I'll bet money that those that say they have , have not either I have seen the end results though I'll bet that the cause of restomod22's dropping the valve was the Edelbrock carb Shoulda used a Holley Time for a 5.0 roller motor to replace that 289.
