al = alabama im assuming? hmm... sounds like undercoating to me. i recommend a pressure washer with detergent injector, and add simple green or something similar. that's how i cleaned mine. my 2.3 auto tranny had a leaky converter seal 
so most of it was covered with tranny fluid. i did notice that the pressure washer removed the undercoating as well, if i got close enough. make sure all your body plugs are ok, or you will soak your carpet when you do this.
why would you lose an ecu? unless youre using a manual 5.0 ecu (A9L) with an auto tranny, in a car that was originally auto. is your 2.3 car originally an auto or stick?
the STOCK fuel pumps for 2.3 and 5.0 are the same as far as i know. however, i doubt that youre putting in a stock 5.0

so yes you will want to upgrade. you can get a 255 lph pump (largest size) for $70 + $10 s/h from TRE Performance: fuel pump linkyeah,al=alabama.the car is a 5 spd car but my ecu is a a9p which is aod.however my 90 vert was aod and i put the 5 spd in using the a9p for the aod and it runs great.so im actually hoping for the same on the coupe.i have a 155lph from bbk for my vert,but what i have been doing is what i take off the vert except for the aod,ive been putting on the coupe to get it running.you know work out the bugs first type of thing.although certian things such as manual rack,no ac,i have deleted every power option.it was origanally 2.3 5spd,manual locks and windows,but i have added manual steering,console delete plate,cobra r radio delete w/ antenna delete.next as i progress will be a tubular k member.what i am shooting for is what tim stockwell accomplished but only better.

youve got it going on, especially with the a9p and the 5 speed. thats a proven thing, you cant go wrong there.
lol, id be afraid of blowing any engine in front of a stock aod. besides, blown strokers kind of wear out faster than a stock engine will, just because of the design. theyre not bad, but theyre not gonna be around in 15 years, like the original car was. i know you can make your car awesome like in the magazine, but it wont be as easy as they make it look. i remember the car craft issue where they took a stock 302 short block (including cam) and made 400hp n/a with just heads, 1.7 rockers, tri-y headers, and a 650 cfm carb. but i dont think my motor will get to that. lol

no doubt.i noticed in a mag a few months ago they was going to put together an econo motor for all purposes.10,500 later it made like 390 and got 16 mpg.i think it could have been done a little bit cheaper.by the way part of the reason i believe mr.stockwells car did so good was because it only had 30,000 original on it.i dont believe a 140,000 mile engine will pull that one off.
nah it doesnt seem like anyone cares.but yes thats true.at least a rering is in order.by the way i had bought a transgo kit for my vert and the trans went south so i converted to 5 spd,just curious would this have been even a worthwhile upgrade?

not a bad idea.ive still got my old aod.odd thing was it went south with no warning.i was on my way home from work and ilost overdrive,a fewminutes later there went drive,and by this time i was so close to home i said screw it and went on.when i got in my driveway all i had was first.all at once. i thought about trying to rebuild it just to see if i could.the local parts house has a rebuild kit for 135.00 but it doesnt include the main drum which i have been told i will probably need.
ohh...it sounds like your tv cable came off or went out of adjustment suddenly. without that, you will lose your tranny in less than 5 miles, ive heard.
you can try rebuilding it yourself if you have the time. if you havent done it before, i wouldnt recommend it. mine was burned up too, and someone just gave it to me.
it took a tci pro super rebuild kit ($220, includes all frictions, steels, and shift kit), a drum (dont remember which one, $65), and that was pretty much it. i paid the tranny guy i used to work with, $200 to [re]build it. i picked up a b&m 2000 lockup converter ($150) and a tci hardened lockup input shaft ($75) from ebay, and bam! it should be good to go. your mileage may vary, of course.
