Excellent Heads/Cam/Intake Install Guide

Guess I been working on the 351W so long that I forgot about not being able to pull the lifters with the heads still bolted down on the 302.

Thanks.

Yea Unless you have World Products Windsor Jr. heads, I just finished up my lifter install 10 minutes ago , the 4 outer lifters wont come out without either lifting up the head like 1/4 inch but you would have to change the head gaskets anyways since u break the seal or you can notch out a little cut out so the lifters can clear. There is a little lip on the bottom which is part of the lower intake mating surface which is what prevents the 4 lifters to coming out. Not very fun either way you do it :notnice:

dbeck -- I've NEVER used a bolt of any length to install a cam. I just bolt the cam gear to the cam -- I've found that always provides enough leverage to install the cam. Haven't had a problem with journals/bearings/lobes in 35 years....

I can imagine the cam gear would get you leverage but that little half inch bolt isnt gonna cut it.

That article is half ass IMO

:nonono:

EDIT: It doesnt even show him cleaning out the cylinder bores or wiping up coolant from the lifter valley...

vristang -- the tool isn't to keep you from having to remove the heads; it's to allow you to not remove the lower intake. On most heads for the 302, you CAN remove the lifters without removing the heads. But there are a few heads where you must remove the heads too.

Bluevenom -- actually -- the problem isn't all the lifters falling through. You can't get the cam out at all for interference between the lifters/lobes/journals. You might get it to move far enough that the furthest lifter back on each side would fall through...but probably not even that far.
