Exhaust backpressure

For those of you knowledgeable to the issue of exhuast backpressure..If i were to cut out my Y-pipe and make a weld directly behind my cats for a true dual, would that create a a huge loss of pressure/performance? I ask because It's a 'cheap' way to connect a custom true dual without an H/X pipe. I'm going for as much rumble as possible out of my upcoming super 40's but don't want a negative effect on sound/peformance.

As far as I know, if you stay with like a 2.25 or 2.5" piping, you should be ok. Of course you can go whatever you want for tips, cause they dont make that big of difference if any. The loss of torque should be minimal. Although I have heard that putting gears in the rear help make up some of that loss.

I think that performance would be best if you made your cuts near the Y, then welded in either an H or X section, close the where the Y was. Maybe even a box section like the MAC prochambers have. It is fairly safe to say that any of these options will provide a performance advantage over true dual exhaust, as scavenging is improved.
I have not seen the underside of these cars though, as I have a 90 and 87. If packaging does not allow one of the above 3 options, then go ahead and install the true dual pipes. The performance difference between straights and crossovers is likely to be fairly small, so you should be happy with either option.

The whole point of cutting the Y and welding behind the cats is to elminate the use of an H/X pipe. It's not worth my $350. I can always buy a Y-pipe adapter if necessary, that's easy. With both cylinder banks having seperate plumbing, that's alot less pressure to build up..maybe not even enough, which is my greatest concern.

The truth is, you wouldn't feel a difference either way. There may be one, but you won't know unless you take it to the dyno.
It will be loud as hell though.

i know you already said you dont want to spend $350 but for more power id suggest getting rid of the cats prefferably a v6 off road h-pipe, my personal opinion would be to get a MAC(or other brand) v6 h-pipe w/ high flow cats. itll increase performance some and make your car louder w/o makin it sound like complete crap(ie no cats). true duals the way you described should make it a little louder but i dont think youll see a difference in performance loss or gain

Yeah, I'll be installing metallic substrate converters later..most likely when I pick up some cheap headers. I'll have the shop do it all at once. I've replaced headers before, but it was on an F-150 and I had a lot more space to work with and it was still complicated. My stang, without a lift, and all the steering, suspension, and wiring harnesses/tubes in the way will be a royal pain. I'll gladly pay a shop the labor charge on that. But this won't happen for quite a while, so I'll go for the looks/sound until then
