If you're re-doing all of it, why not go with long-tubes? If your mind is set on shorties, at least go with ceramic-coated ones so they'll look good for a long time. And whatever you do, avoid equal-length headers like the plague.
I've got the Mac catback in mine, it sounds really nice, in fact I get compliments all the time on the sound of it, but I want to change it eventually because it drones a bit too much for my liking, and its only a couple years old and rusting out already. I'm going with a magnaflow magnapac cat-back next time, they sound sooooooooo good and they're stainless.

longtubes, catted X (I'm changing to O/R sooner or later), and borla stinger catback

It has NO drone AT ALL. It has a really nice idle sound and sounds REALLY agressive at WOT. No lie, I smile every time I floor[ed] it and look around me at the ppl just staring.

bbk ceramic l/t's with shorty o/r h and bassani street competition catback. had it on my old vert, best sounding 5.0 i've ever heard imo, not as ruthlessly loud as some 1ch. muffs but just awesome sounding, like somebody was gonna jump out of the tailpipe and rape u lol.

I've got MAC HTS coated LT's (get Jethot or ceramic coated to keep the heat in), 2.5" durablack prochamber and MAC's durablack 2.5" catback with 3.5" stainless tips.

Love it - sounds great for the convertible... everyone knows it's there but it's not too loud to get tired of riding in the car for a long period.

Wes

Edit - paid $800 shipped for my whole setup.

Too many combo's, to list the best. Lets do some research here;
1. Long tubes are the best as far as sound and performance, But are not emissions friendly.
2. Shorties really dont do much over stock as far as performance, only sound, but are emissions friendly.
3. H pipe's give you the deep throughty sound of a muscle car, and also come in "emissions friendly" (catted) or "emissions unfriendly" (off road also louder).
4. X pipes have a more tuned sound and once again come friendly or unfriendly.
5. Cat backs are a personal choice of sound, however if your looking performance your looking for a straight through design, (borla, magnaflow, bassani, dynomax, etc) just to name a few. Chambered cat backs (flowmaster, mac, etc) give you a louder tone, but do not improve performance that much. Most will tell you a chambered muffler "should" be matched up with an H pipe; and straight through mufflers should be matched up to a X pipe. Now with that all being said what your looking for depends on what your goals for the vehicle are.
With the setup you have listed it looks as though your going for sound, and a small performance gain, if thats the case thats a good combo.
My personal preference is Bassani full length ceramic coated headers, a Bassani off road X pipe, and either a Bassani, borla, or magnaflow catback. Mind you this stuff I have listed is $$$, but it's also the best fitting, and sounding stuff I have ever used, (I still have the shorties, catted X) But have heard this setup on a couple different cars (95 Gt, 03 cobra, and a 98 cobra). I have also heard some H pipe to rustmaster combos that sounded great, but the performance numbers dont lie. Good luck on your choice, it's a tough one.

does bassani even make l/t's? i didn't think they did just mid-lengths and shorty's but i could be wrong. i suggested the cermaic bbk's cuz there only $379 and the shorty h from bbk is only like $129. but absolutely bassani catback if you want a unique sounding mustang, which is what i was going for with my old car. oh and key point about bassani catback, make sure and take baffles out of the tailpipes it makes a huge difference in sound.

The only thing with some headers like longtubes and mid lenghts and such. If you're not going to be running a catted pipe, it'll be hell come inspection time. Not only would you have to swap your stocker H-pipe back on, you'd have to swap the headers too. This is the only reason I don't want long tubes just yet. Until I finally decide to just go with a catted pipe. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't go with them but also think a little further ahead too. If you're going with LTs, will your clutch need to be changed pretty soon? Things like that

Emissions is an issue in my area, so cats it is.

I couldn't be happier with my setup: Bassani X (cats) and Bassani catback. Stock headers for now, but eventually will change out for ceramic ones.

I love my sound. Very open and free reving. Idle is somewhat tame, but putting the pedal down half way to WOT will get some attention. Sure is nice sounding different from most stangs around me. Drone is less than 2 chamber flows. I loved the sound of my stang from inside the car, but had no idea how great it sounded till I put my wife behind the wheel and had her drive around a bit in front of the house. Holy crap! I could listen to that all day.

hah, that's funny that u say that i was the exact same way when i let my friend drive my car and get on it as he drove by me. I couldn't believe how awesome it sounded, i too thought it sounded great inside the car but outside was a huge difference. bassani is the ****!
