Exhaust Drone Is Fixed

I'm spreading the word.

My Magnaflow cat-backs had the 2000 rpm drone and was driving me crazy. I read some info over in the Corral forums and decided to try it. IT WORKS!!!

The problem is the engines strongest tone at 2000 rpm causes the tail pipes to resonate (vibrate like a pipe organ). The fix is to install Side Branch Resonators on the tail pipes to cancel the tone.

Here's the link to the Corral forum, it's explained in good detail there with pics.

I like drone when it's not excessive. With my magnaflow system it's mostly between 2000 and 2300 rpms. I like the drone for the most part because it's not overbaring like with Flowmasters and doesn't look like it's worth the effort to change.

I think that post is interesting...however woudln't that adversely increase backpressure and lower engine output? Your basically creating another cross over that air can get caught in and create more backpressure.

With smalled pipes and a better way of mounting them... this could be very helpful for some people. :nice:

I prefer a little drone like everyone else on here though.

It's still cool that people are out there "tweaking and testing" things though.... you don't see a lot of do it yourself mods anymore.

If you don't have the 2000 rpm drone or genuinely enjoy that sound, then Godspeed (oops, maybe I shouldn't say "speed" around here). If on the other hand you too suffer from that annoying resonance everytime your engine passes through that 1800 - 2100 rpm range and want to get rid of it, here's one solution.

LIRKYG---A side branch resonator is basically a length of exhaust pipe welded into the side of the tail pipe and closed on the other end. The only thing that enters it is sound, I don't think it can cause any restriction.

01GT EIBACH & SCION4LIFE---I can't speak to the effectiveness of the Bassini Baffles directly but..., on the Corral site somene mentioned they had tried them. He said they helped a little but the drone was still annoying and he wanted to get rid of it.

For anyone wanting every last bit of drone gone, there is another option to consider. Weld in some 18" Magnaflow mufflers. Personally, I would do that instead of the suggestion in this thread, but that is just my opinion.

My recommendation for the Bassani baffles comes from personal experience. They have never been removed from my tips since I first installed them over a year ago. They are cheap, easy to install, and very effective. I, too, was questioning the Magnaflow catback (no packs) purchase the first time I was on the highway with a CD playing and trying to hold a conversation. We were practically yelling at each other. The baffles corrected all that. I will concede that there is still a residual drone, but it so much less now. I would guess the drone noise level was probably cut in half (or so), while still having a very cool (although slightly quieted) exhaust note heard from the street. Any one wanting to fix the drone, I would recommend the baffles first which are much easier and cheaper -- they are also easily removable when you want to be loud. That is just my personal opinion, though.
