exhaust help... newbie here

Welcome to stangnet. That sounds about right as far as the mufflers go. Do you know what kind of mufflers he is going to put it? Most people usually buy a kit that goes from the H-pipe that replace all the 2 1/4" tubes with 2 1/2". It is also very common to replace the H-pipe with another intermediary. These cars pick up a lot when you remove the catalytic converters.

Who uses a stock H-pipe? I think he is a bit off base with that. Get an offroad H or if you are in a emissions state a nice aftermarket one with cats.
An aftermarket midpipe and catback will give you a nice little boost.

If you want to save some cash, you could do what I did by mistake - if you live in a non-emissions state. I ordered the wrong kind of Flowmasters for my exhaust, and ended up getting my off-road x-pipe put on first, and the sound was GREAT even with stock mufflers. Obviously the Flows make it that much better, but for $200, and a nice shiny new midpipe in my exhaust, it's a great buy.

The only reason to keep the stock h-pipe is to retain the stock level emissions.
Considering the stock h-pipe has 4 cats and is only 2 1/4" pipe, it is a restriction.
Depending on the shop/tech, they may not want to or can't legally change out the stock h-pipe; depending on what your state emissions are.
If you are looking to just add some sound, you can either just weld in some mufflers or get a whole new cat-back.
However, if you have big plans for the car I would save my money and buy atleast the mid-pipe and the cat-back, maybe even some headers, and install all at the same time.

One thing to consider with the off road H-pipe is by not having the cats, you will either need to remove your AIR system componets or "cap off" the system. You can do a search for more information at this.
As for the mufflers, I would suggest just getting an entire cat-back kit. Flowmaster, MagnaFlow, Pypes, DynoMax, Bassani and others all offer cat-backs for our cars.

Agreed. Don't bother asking which sounds the best cause you are going to get people liking every single one. Just look at vids online for awhile.

or better yet go to the local cruise/street scene and find some 5.0s. You wont find any, except 1 or 2, of the 94-95 5.0s, but you should see a whole lot of Fox's. Try to get an ear for what sounds like what, some clips on the net just dont do certain setups justice.
Also, 4.6's and some setups sound like pure sex...but that doesnt transfer to the 5.0. They are usually real "pretty" sounding...where a 5.0 is more hardcore.
That description is perfectly true! A lot of systems on the 4.6 just sound refined and very deep, whereas the 5.0's just have that harsh, raspy sound. That's one reason I went with a 5.0 over a 4.6.

This is not entirely true. I just got a used o/r H and it had the air tube. I did need to replace my originial air tube with a longer one so it would connect with the H.
I have to leave the air pump and the tubing because I get sniffed yearly.

Are you talking stock setup open H pipe? If so, ugh, you have much better sounds to experience in life.

ha yes i am and it sounds amazing for 50 bucks and. i had dynomax mufflers on and hated how quit the system was so i cut them and replaced them with pipe, i even kept my tips coming out the back.
