Exhaust sealent

My dad was watching Trucks! the other day, and he mentioned that as they were installing the exhaust, he used a sealent where the pipes slid together in conjunction with the clamps. There are a few spots on my x pipe that are leaking (yes I have taken it apart 3 times, only reducing the number of leaks, breaking one clamp in the process of tightening them) and had considered using some sealent. The only stuff I was able to find was some 700 degree gasket sealer, but was not sure if there was something more specific?

We use Red Permatex RTV (Hi Temp and o2 sensor safe) on all our racecar exhaust systems and it holds up very well. In some cases we don't even run gaskets at the head - just the RTV.

I will second what Big-Foot has said. I used RTV sealer without a gasket when I rebuilt a 302 to mount the stock exhaust manifolds to the head and NO LEAKS in over 10 years!!

ive seen some paste brush on stuff, i think, but i dont remember. it was used at lapd, a corvette store, they may tell you?

Picked up some Permatex today, now I just have to get under the car tomorrow and take everything apart. Ah well, 4th times a charm Thanks for the replies guys

No problem. The real tricks are:

1) Clean everything as best you can - I use lacquer thinner or Brake-Clean.
2) Let the stuff cure at leat 8 hours before you put it to use. I usually wait overnight or longer.
