Exhuasted search - Cobra Crank question still unanswered...

All I want to know, is -> What is the difference in 96-98 Cobra Forged Crank and an 03/04 Cobra Forged Steel Crank? Are they both the routine 4340 steel forged 8-bolt part? Is one any stronger than the other? Is one weighted any better/differently(better balanced) than the other? Wouldn't any 4340 forged steel crank(aftermarket) be comparable?

AFAIK, all 96+ cobras share the same forged crank, all 8 bolt. If you look in a FRPP parts catalog, you'll only see one listing for the cobra crank. I cannot comment on aftermarket cranks, however - not sure how they all stack up to one another.

That being said, what are your plans for the car? The reason I ask is because there are actually fewer reported crank failures for the stock nodular iron than there are with the cobra crank. There have been threads about this both here and on other Stang forums. Don't forget that a forged steel crank will add to your rotating mass, I'd prefer the lighter nodular crank for a fun street car, as long as I wasn't pushing over 500rwhp.

Their is a big differenc between the mechanics and the sevice advisors. Service advisors are usully clueless and need you to explain things eight times and they still dont get it. The shop mechanics will finish your sentence before you know how to ask it.

I know that the 96 to 98 cobra had a two piece crankshaft gear that would occasionally fail on high horse and supercharged applications in 99 they changed to a one piece thats the only diff I can think off.

Hmm, ok thanks guys. And I know not all dealership guys are as clueless as others. I just have trust issues with those guys from past experiences. GM's ASE cert techs were always the worst - took two hours one night for them to figure out how to program my new keyless remote to my Z28. They looked in about three or four books and tried some other remotes while I watched through the glass in the waiting room feeling like I was at the local zoo.

Anyways, this is a blower application for high RPM 12-14 lbs of boost and over 650 ponies at the flywheel. I don't think the Nodular Iron Crank will stretch to those limits. I did read that in my searches about the forged cranks failing more often than the cast cranks, and being heavier than the iron. But I'm going to need something a little stronger.

REALLY...... Hmmm do you want to do a search on some of the tech threads on here and look at my input? I can link many threads to you where I have diaged cars on here for people and saved them lots of money, one guy was told by a private shop and a dealer that he needed a motor and over this forum I diaged it as having a back coil pack leading to fuel wash in that cylinder. hell here is one just from today..

Many tech both at private shops and at dealers are not qualified for the job, this is due to reasons I rather not waste my time typing up, but do not lump all of us like that.

Well anyways next time I have a question about how to remove a oil cap I will come looking for you..

Yeah I read that, so I guess I would fall into the less clueless category, that is hardly a improvement over what you originally said.

there are bad dealer techs and bad private shop techs. sadly many shops including private ones now are trying to hire cheap labor to try and cut cost.

There are also good parts guys and bad parts guys, go post in randys forum over on MD about how dealer parts guys are clueless and you will probably get a response from him that would make mine look friendly

Well anyways this is silly and not worth arguing about.

Being a moderator means not letting this place turn into the "Almost Anything Goes" LS1.com fourm. I can't believe a flame war started in a TECH thread because of a whimsical/light-hearted jab at the dealership folks.
