Explorer intake on a stock 5.0

So Ive decided instead of pinching pennies on an inexpensive iron-headed combo now, I'll save up for a quality h/c/i and do it right once. In the mean time, I was thinking about a little nitrous shot to tie me over.

So the question is, would an explorer upper/lower intake make much of a difference on my stock longblock? Since a plate nitrous kit is superior to a single fogger kind, I figured Id pick up an explorer intake out of a junkyard and install it in my stang along with a gt40 plate nitrous kit. The stock lower is restrictive, so I figure an explorer intake should be a good bang for the buck and increase power n/a and on the spray. How about it? An explorer intake on an otherwise stock longblock wont decrease low-end torque will it?

You could get your stocker ported by Tmoss for a around a $100 and get a stock intake n20 plate.

Those plates are nice but really if your going to spray under 150-175hp they are kinda overkill. If you are scared of flowing fuel in your intake look at a dry kit.

If your saving for a matched HCI setup down the road wait to get the intake that goes with that combo. You can then turn aound and sell your ported stocker and get some money back out of it and not be out too much in the first place.

If you have a line on a cheap exploder intake you could re-sell it and pay for the port work and some money to put to that HCI setup.

Well, the reason I was thinkin exploder intake is because I can pick one up for just a little more than a tmoss porting on my stocker would cost. I was then planning to get a plate kit for the gt40, and I can re-use it when I get my h/c/i (If I decide on afr 165, ported cobra, fti) I could then re-sell the exploder for similar price that I bought it for.

What you say about the plate kit being overkill has got me thinking... I was planning to run a 100 shot as of now, and I just like the plate idea, its a nice compromise between direct port and a single-nozzle wet kit. Id just feel uneasy with a standard wet shooting fuel through my tb and upper, and I dont want to run a dry on the stock inj's (and I want to avoid upgrading the inj's because I want to use the stock tune off juice) Is the plate kit bad for a 100 shot? Should I just take my chances with a standard wet kit (with the safety goodies)?

With the wet kit as long as you do not spray below 3k rpm you will not really have an issue with fuel "fall off". When you get to the 150-175 level your getting close to having a LOT of fuel being "attached" to the sprayed mix and run a greater chance for fuel drop off that leads to puddling of fuel in the intake. That is why you really do not see many single nozzle wet kits over 175.

You can run a 100 dry shot on your stock injectors if your N/A combo is fairly stock (and from what your saying it is). You may want to get a bigger fuel pump for piece of mind but generally at 100hp your still safe. I have had several buddies run dry 100-125-and one with a 150 shot on stock 19's and all ran like a raped ape and no issues with the supporting safty stuff.

If your getting the exlplorer intake that cheap then go-fer-it. You do know you can just keep the explorer and get it ported so you do not need to re-sell if you plan on running it with the H/C combo.

I like those plates, they are just fairly pricey and for the level of shot your going to run your not going to see much benifit other than being able to setup up to BIG shots down the road.

This is good advice. A 100 shot isnt too big a deal, just follow the directions and pull timing accordingly. Don't buy the same parts twice!
