A friend of mine told me many years ago that the heads from a v-8 explorer are upgrade for a 94 mustang. Then I saw on a local listing that the explorer intake system is the same as a gt40 intake. Is this true?
If so:
1)what year explorer? Of course i know it has to be v-8.
2) what parts from that motor is an upgrade or at least better then the stock mustang. 5.0
3) is there a real benefit installing a gt40

I have a 94 5.0

Any of the late model, pre-02 V8 Explorers will have what you're looking for. If you're looking for the GT40P heads, you'll want to look for a 97 1/2+, since that's when they changed the heads. Otherwise, they used the same iron GT40 heads as the 93-95 Cobra. The shortblock (minus the cam) is the same as a Mustang.

I just got mine out of a 2000 explorer, almost every bolt was grade 8 in the thing, and its gt40p heads, gt40/explorer intake. believe the last year was 2001 and mountaineers and 1 other all are the same engine.

if i had to do it all over again...

exploder motor - 500 bucks
kenny bell on the gt40 lower
full exhaust. done

The heads (gt40 and gt40p) are both better than the stock e7s. The shortblock is the same as mentioned above. The intake is close to the gt40 intake with individual runners, i believe, and performs as well as the cobra intake. So yes, the heads and intake is a great upgrade on the stock motor.

Do some searching, this has been discussed a million times and you will find all the answers you need.

Man thanks.... I just did that.
I have still have a couple of questions.
1) Are both upper and lower intakes needed for the upgrade? If not which one is the upgrade upper or lower?
2) What is a decent selling price for the U/L explorer intake?
there is one on ebay for $225 with 40 minutes to go. do they sell for more or is that the average price?

3) what is a decent price on the heads off the explorer?
lets say unknown condition vs. good heads ready to bolt on.

I have seen unknown P heads go for as little as $50 each if you pull them or $70 each pulled. These were HIGH mileage heads.

As for the intake, you need both upper and lower and if you search you can score them for under $200... remember if you go explorer you either need to do the fox TB swap or get an elbow... I held out for a 94/95 cobra intake that I got for cheap... under $200 if I recall... THen with gaskets and everything tied into it total cost was ~$240 including an oil change and new coolant... SOTP difference was nice.

I'm kinda new to fords in general. although I have a 94 mustang and a 97 explorer. Both are all stock and both do not give me any problems.
I can get the both intakes for $150, the heads for $150 a set at a local yard. That is the main reason I was asking. I believe that have 2 or 3 motors there now.
If thats a good deal I was thinking I might be able to pass it on to some other poeple that might want some. I have no idea what they are worth. I didn't know if that was on the high or low side.
thanks,
Albert

As I was searching. I read something about the throttle body. I think it said I would need to use the pre 93. I can't find that tread again. Will I have to change out the throttle body?
if so, are the 5.0 mustang and the 5.0 crown vic the same parts? Many more crowns in the yard then mustangs.
thanks and sorry for all the question.
