F.A.S.T. vs. stock ECU

What's your guys thoughts on running a stand alone system for a DD? Which one is the one you prefer and why? FAST, BigStuff, etc...

Need some help. I'm doing a complete rebuild and probably gonna trash the stock ECU.

Also should I go back with a push rod motor or maybe go the 4V modular route?

im running the PMS standalone tuner on my 94 gt, i like that you dont need a laptop for this it has its own little screen. the price is at 1100 ish on my car but its worth it. you control everything fuel, timing, all that good stuff. and its probably the best tuner for a forced induction car as well. it will adjust timing according to boost. its a great tuner not much else to say on it. give Rick at Anderson Ford Motorsport a call he can anwser all your questions about it. and if you wanna read up on it the company who makes it for AFM is at www.efisystems.com

Yes I hear great things about the PMS ....but they are only good for MUSTANGS. The fast can be used for just about any car they make a harness for so thats kinda nice. Same with the AEM EMS. But I dunno if that matters to you...

Stand alone can make a 1000 hp monster car daily driveable and can make a stock 200hp setup completly undriveable... its all in the tune.

Currently running AEM EMS and its very daily driveable...

Also the PMS is not a true stand alone as the stock ECU is still in play. Not putting it down, just pointing that out.

I thought the PMS was a piggyback. sounds promising though.

I'm probably gonna need a full system like a FAST or AEM.

Does the FAST use a speed density setup or is it MAF?

I have researched this for the past year, as a standalone is my next step towards that 1000 rwhp goal, and I don't like to buy things twice.. I will be going with the AEM EMS and UEGO wideband.. Total price for the plug and play computer and wideband is about $1800 from Bob Kurgan..I will be running speed density with it, although you do have your choice of MAF or SD..

Is their a benefit to speed density over MAF? Or whats the pros and cons should I say?

BIG STUFF 3

Personaly i would go withe the BIG STUFF 3 setup. The guy that developed it is the guy that invented the first stand alone engine managment. The bad part is that you will really need to know what you are doing when it comes to tuneing the car. It is sequetial so you can actually control each injector independently. F.A.S.T is bank to bank so you can only adjust all four injectors on either side of the motor. With speed density cars you can set them up to recognise boost and set it up to automaticaly adjust timing and injector pulse widths and all sorts of good stuff for what boost you might be running. Please don't post about things that you have no idea about... F.A.S.T USED to have bank to bank as their base low end system, Sequential has always been an option though, and now with their new system sequential is standard. I run an old grey box on my twin turbo mopar, it's full sequential with wideband and runs closed loop at all RPMs (another thing to check for).

The BS3 sounds like a good system and I know many are happy with it, but I warn you ya get what you pay for. I don't have direct experience with BS3 so I won't say much other than I have looked at their interface software and it looks like it was written by a first year computer science intern, it BLOWs. If any of their software in the actual box is written as poorly then lookout

No MAF as you get rid of the restriction as well as you never have to worry about pegging it... The MAF is actually a much bigger restriction than people think. Especially on boosted applications.

Example: running a Stock pulley i was seeing maybe 10#'s with MAF. Switched to MAP... 14#'s with 15 - 16 encountered at times at red line.... STOCK 3.33 PULLEY!!! (Granted belt slippage and other factors could have been in there...)

At times i have found that it can be easier to tune. It's Much easier to think in terms of pressure rather than flow... at least for me.
