Factory Window Tint?

Did any of the 96-04 GTs come with this option? And if so, what percentage were they?

I went to get my car inspected this past weekend (turns out it isn't due for another 6 months ). The inspector said that if the tint was from the factory that he didn't have to check it or anything, but if it was put on, I had to pay an extra $10 just because I have tint. He looked at it and said that it was not factory (although it looks very factory and the previous (original) owner said it was), although I'm not sure how he determined if it was factory or not; I think he was ing me.

And on top of all this. I asked him to check it for me anyway, and he was nice and did. He said it has to be 32%, and it came out to 30.5%, and he therefore informed me that I wouldn't be able to get it passed when time actually came around for me to get it inspected. So I'm obviously like WDF. A) I'm almost positive it's factory and therefore would be exempt anyway, and B) my brother has 25% on his truck and is WAY darker than mine. Using my bro's 25% as a comparison, there's NO way mine is 30%.

Im pretty sure factory tint is in the glass not on the glass.
If there is film on the glass its not factory.

I'm 100% sure factory tint was not an option for 2002, and 99% sure it was not an option for 96-04.

I suppose a dealer might have had tint applied to the car, but that still would not be factory tint. Factory tint on other cars, especially suv's, is noticeably dark, whereas "tinted windows", as listed on the window sticker of my Mustang when it was new, is almost clear.

i get inspected with 5% all around. 30% is next to nothing! go to a diff shop and is they say the same just roll down your windows and pull the fuse. they wont bother to check it

Our factory tint is solar tint. All the vans and suvs you see have smoked tint and isnt a film like aftermarket tint is.

Ditto.........or find a cool inspection place where you can pay cash and get your sticker. Ask around the race shops to find out who is the good guy to go and see.

So I guess it isn't factory. It is a film on the window, not in it, so I guess that's what he looked at to determine if it was factory or not. It's just that it's so perfect all over the entire car that I couldn't hardly believe someone had actually done it. Like in the rear window; there's the black trim type stuff going all the way around the window; it goes from solid black and fades off to clear via a dot matrix; well, the tint is cut, pretty much perfectly, around each one of those teeny tiny dots. Was hard for me to believe someone actually took the time/had the skill to do that.

And about getting it passed. Yea, I have sources, but my source was closed on the day I went, and I didn't really think it would be necessary to have to go to him anyway. Guess I was wrong again. I still call on the 30% though...

I sued to work at a factory that made auto glass. The SUV rear window type is made of tinted material.


I really wish there was a way to replace the factory clear with the factory smoked. Way more durable, and no need for film to be applied...


Oh well.


I've got 30% on my doors/windshield, 20% on the rear, and 5% (or 8, doesn't matter, they're basically the same) on the small rear "windows".

Tint laws vary state to state as well. Indiana is max 30% on front glass, for example.
