If you blow the air foward, toward the radiator, it'll be like a jet in reverse thrust, and it'll slow you down.

Cooling air moves through the radiator from front to back. The idea of the fan is to pull air through the radiator when there is insufficient airflow moving through it, such as when your stopped or driving slowly.
Unfortunately, the stock fan blades cause a lot of drag, and load the engine down at high RPMs. The flex fan is supposed to reduce this effect. As the flex fan is spun faster the blades twist and flatten out, reducing the drag and load on the engine -- more HP available to the rear wheels (less fan noise too). This pulls far less air through the radiator, but you should be moving at a sufficient speed to provide enough air through the radiator without the help of the fan.
I would suspect that if you have a flex fan and a high ratio rear end, you could have some cooling issues. The fan blades would flatten out while your moving at a slower speed, so less cooling air through the radiator. A 3-row, aluminum radiator might help.
