few question about the 05/06 gt

hey I've been looking at the 05/06 gt's but have a couple questions I'm seeing people retuning the computer for a cold air intake? I'm kind of confused I have a fairly modded grandprix gtp and you can get some 480 crank hp out of it before you need to even touch the computer programming..? I would wait for the 07 cobra but that's way out of my price range I've been doing some reading and I would just go with full boltons and a saleen supercharger kit

When I called the people at SCT they told me I would actually have less power if I didn't tune it and put the intake on than if i stayed stock. Now obviously they want to sell their product but I have seen much the same info backed up here on the forum. Basically I think any power mod you do to these they need to be retuned....gotta love those computers.

holy jebus!! what ever happened to the mas air sensor.. that's the whole idea behind it.. it sees more air coming into the motor so it adds more fuel then checks the o2 sensor to make sure it's doing it's job correctly.. that's grossly simplified but what the hell was ford thinking does this computer not have the ability to adjust air/fuel on its own?

edit: you guys must spend alot of time on the dyno lol but it looks like I'll be doing the same since I test drove one and I love it as much as it sounds like the ECU sucks.

I wouldnt resort to posting that the ECU sucks, "strict" would be a better term to use.

My theory is that Ford wishes to keep variables out of play in their units for fear of too many warranty issues. Its been stated that even if Ford tech find that you have modified the tune of the ECU that you void any and all vehicle warranties.

I am not bothered much by this new generation of ECU, there was a day that I was a "carburetor cowboy" back in the classic forums. I was scared to think what hell it must be to produce full throttle power as well as part throttle power with electronics (known to have inherit issues) over a mechanical set of barrels. I have come to sense that it really isnt much trouble at all with a support network already in place for safe enough tunes for the masses.

Of course I wont spray my Stage 1 without dyno tuning time with that very important wideband air/fuel sensor.

well it sounds like a better idea to wait until I have everything I want then get a dyno tune so I'm not at the shop every other weekend..

The new 05 Computer (Spanish Oak) is a seriously controlling item. If you do some research you will see that the only thing that you can do to the 05 without touching the computer is adding some stickers.

Now K&N advertises that one doesn't need a tune but I wouldn't trust it. I have seen some dyno graphs that show WAY Lean cars with such mods. Most good parts companies sell a reflasher with their cold air kits.

And as far as a GTP going to 480hp without touching the computer… I wouldn’t try that. There is no way the stock programming provides enough gas to that thing to not detonate.


PS I was going to buy a 07 Cobra, but I EXTREMELY glad that I bought this GT

the stock computer in the grandprix gtp will continue to add fuel to keep the air fuel ratio reguardless of hp but 480hp is the limit as the mass air meter is pegged at that point THEN the car will go lean as the computer can't see anymore air entering the motor.

if anything I'm sure I could just swap the suspension off a cobra when it comes out and once I have a blower strapped to the motor I'll be happy.
